I am curious what people's first jobs were and at what age you got your first job. Also, how did your AS factor in to that?

Do you drive? If so, at what age did you get your license.

Smiles!

My first job was as a cashier at a grocery store when I was 16. It was horrible for many reasons. Too much pressure to be fast and I hated dealing with the customers. But the worst part of it was that there was a mentally challenged bagger who thought it was hilarious to keep singing part of a song that really annoyed me. I dreaded going to work every day.

I got my license at 16, but I didn't get my own car until I was 17. So unless there was a vehicle available, I usually rode my bike to work because it was fairly close.

I finally quit my first job when I got a job working at a vet's office, cleaning cages and whatnot. It was much better because I was mostly left to work by myself. That's when I bought a cheapo car because the office was much farther from my house than the grocery store had been. I had that job until I graduated from high school and left town for college.

I worked in a chain pizza restaurant inside a department store when I was 16. A friend who already worked there recommended me. I couldn't drive at the time, but my mom was still a stay-at-home mom at the time, and my job was less than 2 minutes by car from my home, so she drove me. I'm good at faking it, so I could handle the talking to customers part. However, I had a real reputation for weirdness with my coworkers. I got in trouble a lot for singing loudly while washing the pizza pans, and for taking too long bringing in supplies from the stockroom (the stacks of cups and boxes mesmerized me!) I found most of my coworkers tedious and didn't talk to them much, but I did talk to my friend so I didn't look too weird. My oddnesses were mostly overlooked because I was reliable, good at my job, and often did extra cleaning when business was slow.

I got my drivers license at age 17 1/2, but in retrospect I really shouldn't have been allowed to have it. The examiner was my driver's ed teacher. I did OK in the driver's ed course, but that was only because my in-the-car timeslot was 10 AM, when there was almost no traffic in the area. This guy always took the same route for the exam, so I just practiced that many times with my dad until I knew it by heart. Even after I got my license, my parents rarely allowed me to drive alone until the second half of my senior year (I was 18 1/2 by then), and it was probably a good decision on their part, since I consistently freaked out and did stupid things when I was lost or in new traffic patterns.

I got my first job when I was 18 and it was only part time and not for a few hours. It was a job at a folkshop and they hire people with disabilities so they can gain job experiance to help them be successful.

I got my license when I was almost 17. It was May when I passed the driving test. But I only drove to school and back and to my doctor's appointment and back. I stop at stores after school sometimes and after my doctor's appointment. Sometimes I drive myself to places such as when I was seeing a movie or renting a movie, going to a yard sale. But I never drove off very far because I didn't have a job then and I didn't make very much money. I didn't start going far on my own like 60 miles away when I got SSI so I basically started paying for my own gas because I had my own car now and I was paying for my own clothes and items I needed like pads or tampons, shampoo, etc.

Wow, you guys rule! I got my first job at age 16, as a telemarketer. My instructions were to stuff about five envelopes with these forms, and then make calls. When I got a prospect, I would have an envelope already to go. After bombing badly on the phones, I decided to just stuff envelopes. I got fired, LOL. Also my lack of eye contact and extreme "shyness" freaked them out. I got another job at a fast food restaurant, but kept spending too much time in the supplies area, straightening out stacks of things, and my weirdness was too pronounced, so I got fired again. Ah, those were the days...

I got my first job after I graduated high school, and my (older) brother basically got me the job, since he worked there. The job was cleaning and detailing boats at a new boat dealership, which also had a service department. Thinking back on it, AS may have played a role in my work (being very detail oriented and taking too long to finish the jobs) and also my getting fired from there (I followed all instructions literally and to the letter, and wrongly assumed the chemicals we used there were labeled correctly.) I ended up with 3rd degree chemical burns on my arms from using the wrong chemicals, and was fired for not being able to do my job while in recovery.

My second job was fast food, and I did good there, because of the routines, and my own habit of cleanliness and order. My third job was the Navy, and I did very well there, until I got involved with a psychotic girlfriend, who pretty much messed my life up.

I got my license when I was 16, although I didn't have my own car until after I was 18 and joined the Navy, when I inherited my mom's old car. Driving has never been an issue for me. I love to drive, and I have driven long distances (from Florida to New England, for instance) by myself, though I prefer to have company when driving.

I should mention that I didn't know I had AS until a few short years ago, so everything I did before that was without that knowledge.

I would have been fired from both of those jobs too...definitely. I have an intense fear of the phone and I could see me doing the same thing that you did at the fast food restaurant.

First summer job I got was 18 with manpower or Kelly services in a manufacturing environment making cardboard boxes and packaging. I am not sure when I got my license. I think it was 16 or so.

First job was boxing donuts at a Krispy Kreme store. I was 17, during the summer before I went to college.

Part-time work, usually 4pm until anywhere from 11pm to 1am, depending on how fast things went and how big the order was.

To this day I can't stand the smell of those damn things... Boxing over 4000 in a night a couple times, leaving the store reeking of fresh glazed donuts... I used to speed up if I was driving down the road and saw a "Hot Now" light on.

I think I may have been the only person in Houston that was happy to see those stores close down.

I felt the same way about pizza, when I worked as a waitress in a restaurant that served it. They always let me take home the leftover pizza, and soon I was heartily sick of it. Even though that was a long time ago, I still feel a reluctance to order any, unless I'm starving and its the quickest thing.

My first job was working at a malt shop as a dishwasher. I liked it but the fast pace stressed me out sometimes. I started working 1 4 hour shift and eventually went to 3-4 shifts a week, and the staff loved me. I still eat there to this day, and i rarely have to pay for food.

I got my license when I was 16. So far i've gone through a few cars.
-1995 geo metro
-1998 saturn sl2
-1986 porsche 944
-1993 geo tracker
-1993-jeep cherokee
-1992 geo storm gsi
-2000 vw beetle
-1995 lexus sc300
-1983 volvo 240. I never really drove it much because i didnt have a license. I just sat in the back yard revving it. :D

My first job was a paper round which I did when I was 14. I used to get up at 4.30 to help the newsagent owner put weekend supplements in the papers. That was horrible, but I liked the actual paper round, lots of time thinking things through on my own, and good exercise.

I still can't drive and don't plan to. I'm 21.
