How to get employment without competition?

So, what is the largest distance you'd be willing to walk each day to and from work? Walking AND public transport in combination are not a bad thing at least in Ireland and Germany where I worked. I walk about 20 minutes to the bus stop and ride it for 15 minutes to my workplace. Seriously, stop thinking of what you cannot do or you feel completely inept at everything!

I have a medical problem other than AS that would stop me from getting a licence, it is not me thinking so that would stop me but a real medical problem. FACT.

Not sure about the distance, it would have to be in the normal times when public transport is running (i.e. not after a certain time). I don't go outside at all for weeks or months on end though at the moment I can't cope without support which I don't get.

Why are people saying self employment? I don't want to have another breakdown and I wouldn't have the money to start a business, I have student debt and a bad credit rating.

People are saying self employment because in fact you've ruled out every other possible job by the following qualifications:

1. You can't leave your house unaccompanied, and there is no one to do that.
2. You can't drive.
3. You cannot apply to any job that has any other applicants, or "competition" for the position.

So you are, by definition, looking for a way to make money by staying at home and never leaving your house, doing something that nobody else is doing or would want to do.

That leaves only one possibility: self employment from home.

Now that you've ruled that out too with your qualification that you're incapable of doing it because it would cause a breakdown, you have ruled out every possible option for earning money except for:

1. Getting on social assistance.
2. Illegal activities such as selling drugs or prostituting yourself.
3. Marrying a wealthy spouse for their money.

When you then rule out #1 because you've tried and they've refused, #2 because you're not a criminal, and #3 because you're not a gorgeous model, you have dismissed every source of revenue that exists except for panhandling and begging for money.

Maybe you need to invest your available resources into finding someone who can help you with your application to get social assistance. Maybe someone from a church could help you with that or refer you to other agencies. Other than that, I can only suggest that you go beg for coins on the sidewalk. I don't mean that to be cruel or unfeeling, but you really only have so many practical options and you've disqualified all of them except for that.

Quite honestly I think you may be emotionally drowning and reaching out grasping for someone to save you, maybe unable to help yourself without some kind of support. If that's not true then I apologize for assuming too much. If it is true, you may need some emotional support or counseling before you can do much of anything practical in terms of working. Without needed support, you may find yourself fearfully saying that every option that can be suggested sounds impossible to you, until nothing is left.

You might like to look into your local library to find books dealing with self image and skill development. I'm reading a good book at the moment by Michael Michalko called 'Tinkertoys', all about exercises in creative thinking. And I want to get 'Bear Hunt: Earn Your Living By Doing What You Love' by Malcolm McClean.

So, you're stuck at home. Any chances you'll develop any skills? Carpentry, computer programming, jewelry making, cake decorating???

AS has work positives. 'The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome' by Tony Attwood says that a performance appraisal of an AS employee might conclude that s/he is:

'reliable, persistent, a perfectionist, accurate, logical'... and a bunch of other things.

I've noticed in several books on the subject that there are positives that it is advised to emphasis. But even NTs can talk themselves into a state of depression. So back to the idea of looking into positive self talk, affirmations, whatever. Hit the library, hit the books, learn how you can self talk into a brighter self view.

If you want to get a job that you will not have to compete for, you will need to look for jobs that no one else is willing to do. These are usually disgusting or really dangerous. The distasteful nature of the job means few people will be competing with you. Unfortunately these kinds of jobs rarely pay well (some do, but most don't)

Now if you are good at teaching yourself stuff and you have a nearby library or internet connection, you might be able to teach yourself some skills that few people are likely to have, but are in demand. Do some research... What kinds of businesses are within the range of public transportation and require skills that you have or can learn? Pick a couple of your best skills and see if they can be made useful to some of the local businesses. Then go to those businesses and let them know how much money they could save or earn by hiring you.

In convincing someone to hire you, always pay attention to how it will help the employer to hire you specifically. Your skills or your attention to detail or your commitment to doing the job until it's done are good traits that an employer is looking for.

By free education, I'm not referring to courses. I mean go to the library and get books on whatever subject interests you. Plus you have internet access. There are lots of free manuals online. Learn/practice a subject or skill set at home. Even without the certificate. If you can DEMONSTRATE a high quality of work in your chosen self taught subject, you will demonstrate:

Interest

Aptitude

Attitude

And that he doesn't have to start from scratch.

I remember years ago I did three hospitality certificates. We had to talk to bosses, and one informed us that he'd rather employ someone to work in his bar who hadn't done a course. That way he could train the person how he wanted, rather than hire some recent graduate who thought they knew everything and refused to do it the boss's way.

Horticulture might be a good one. There's always lots of specialty books on the subject. You could impress any boss with your knowledge. Remember, you have to do the time anyway, so fill it. You can learn languages for free using library resources, online resources, and finding native speakers who want to practice their english. An impressive skill that's free and doesn't weigh even one ounce to carry in your head.

You have 2 options: look for work that other people might not want to do(or on schedules they don't want to work) or find a busy sidewalk and sit with a cup and a sob story on cardboard. Choose wisely.
