Since I was young, I had very sensitive hearing so I decided to become a sound engineer.
Currently about to finish my Diploma in Technical Production and co-produce a band's first album at the end of August.

I'm going to work in finance, and eventually start my own hedge fund and make myself a billionaire.

What sort of degree(s) do you plan to get to do this?

Economics and/or business. I'm also hoping to do an internship at Goldman Sachs or a similar company while I study.

Internship should definitely help, but I've learned there's no guarantees in getting hired - especially with the way the economy is these days. :( I have an MBA in Economic Crime & Fraud Management, which I completed last May, and am stuck checking groceries. 20 hours a week. No benefits. I'm in my 30s. It's been pretty depressing.

Not good at all, I hope things look up for you soon.

That's the problem, though, I've heard a lot about how people are coming out of university but are unable to get work. Luckily when I finish all my education it'll be a good few years away from now and the economy will hopefully be in better shape. Time will tell, though.

Thank you, me too! :) I sure hope the economy improves too!

Yup .. I know loads of folks, regrettably, with great degrees but their job, if they have one at all, isn't anywhere close. My fiancee has a degree in meteorology. She's working at a help desk for a local chain of grocery stores (same chain I check groceries for).

My undergraduate degree, which I completed in 2001, was in Russian language, Journalism, and History. I ended up working in a one-hour photo center at a Wal-Mart. Eventually I ended up in a help desk like position for a public school system, and then (ugh) insurance. So that's when I went back to schoo for my masters so I could get a better job..............Alas.

Why not go and start your own business? Seems sensible in your situation. Maybe team up with the other people you know who have crap jobs and go start some sort of company.

Because that requires start-up funds, and I can barely afford my bills as it is. :( I didn't have any income for the majority of the time I was working on my masters. Plus, I'm on a medical diet for life (gluten free) which makes some of our grocery shopping expensive. I don't even know what I'd start a business in..

Get friends and family to put some money in, and if you team up with the other people you know with bad jobs then you can all put a bit in too. It's easier to get people interested in these things than you think, I even got a few teachers at my school to agree to invest in my hedge fund when it starts!

As for what to start the business in, do something that will play to your strengths, just remember to make it something that customers are likely to buy into.

I don't know anyone with money, family included. This isn't a rich area, and it's a really small town. I'm probably in debt by about 50,000, mostly thanks to my MBA, and that doesn't include what I owe my Dad, before he wasn't able to help me any more.

I only moved here last year, to be with my spouse, so I don't really know anyone outside of work, and while I get along with my coworkers, they're not people I can turn to for money, and most of them are kids working a few hours a week. Or single parents that can't make ends meet either. Going to business with them would make me scream. One of the reasons I want to get a job away from this company is to preferably work with more people closer to my age or older. I'm not really a people person either, so going into business with other people... talk about stress! I tried to get into loss prevention for my current company, and was pretty much told I'd have to be a cashier for 5 years or so to get seniority and inside promotion (instead of outside hiring) ... but what I usually see happen is the social, outgoing friends that grew up here get promoted - even if they're not out of high school yet.

I also work with a number of people who don't really see why it's a big deal if things get stolen, or if you plagariaze, or otherwise do illegal things, so trying to go into business with them to STOP fraud would be ludicrous.

What I really wanted to do was help victims of identity theft, but on my own, I'd absolutely have to be licensed as a P.I. which would take more schooling, and not a type that I can get scholarship or government money for. I don't have any friends who have knowledge or experience in the field, and there is already a local investigations company that is well respected. I've tried for months to get in with them, but the boss believes that I'm over-qualified because of my degree - even though I passed word along that I was willing to start from the bottom to get hands-on experience. My only close friend, fiancee aside, who lives anywhere nearby has her masters in voice (opera singer), so we can't help each other out career-wise.

I don't know about where you live, but here, once you have so many employees, you have to be able to afford and offer worker's comp insurance which is REALLY expensive.

I even tried to get job placement help through a local state agency who helps people with disabilities ... didn't get me anywhere except insulted by the people "helping" me.

If I had the kind of money needed to start a business, I'd just pay off my debt and be a house-wife and write, and the money my fiancee makes.. she said it'd be enough for me to do just that - stay home and write.

That's a really bad situation, especially the agency that didn't let you in because you're "over-qualified", that's just ridiculous.

I can't really say much else but I hope things look up for you I guess. It's sad that such talented people have to be stuck in crappy jobs because they don't happen to be popular enough.

As far as majors go, possible candidates are:

1. Computer Science
2. Physics
3. Computer Engineering
4. Neuroscience

They're all pretty tied together but really at this point I'm just trying to decide which aspect to study first. I am especially interested in digital physics, which is the field based on the theory that the universe is informational and therefore computational. I've been working for years on concepts and ideas for a way to "compute" or model the way the universe works and simulate anything in it by using the basic building block of string theory: the string. The only problem right now is that not enough is known about the behavior (or even the existence) of these strings in order to write an algorithm to predict every possible behavior these strings can produce. Once that's possible, it could happen :P

I'd like to work in the non-profit sector. Just that, generally, non-profit, without specification. I feel strongly about a lot of issues.

I like working at places where I actually feel I'm doing something I can be proud of, and where my co-workers actually care about what they are doing.

*sigh* I know exactly what you mean. I almost got a job at a center for abused and neglected kids, but after an interview and two in-person interviews, they told me they chose another candidate. =( Now I'm looking at something part-time that might never actually materialize.

All I want out of a job is meaning and the ability to survive, even if it means still living with my mom at 25. I just want to be able to contribute to the future, and not starve in the process. Why is that so hard?

Right now, I'm traveling on the Renaissance Faire circuit. It means dealing with people for 10-12 hours per day, but only 2 days per week. The rest of the time I can spend with one of the best and most eclectic communities I've ever known or heard of. But it doesn't MEAN much...
