How did you get your job?

I got my 1st job because I was working with an organization that helped people with disabilities become independent & they lined it up for me; I was a dish-washer at IHOP. I got my 2nd job at WalMart by putting in an application online & getting an interview & passing the drug test. I was currently employed & had 10months work expedience at IHOP, & Christmas time was coming up(I was hired in November) & WalMart had a remodel planned rite after xMas so they were doing a lot of hiring. I got my 3rd job at a sporting-goods store 6months after I left WalMart because it was a custodial job, I had 25months expedience cleaning floors at WalMart, & my supervisor at WalMart & the guy rite under him had worked there before for a bit & I mentioned their names when I was asked about why I applied there during my interview.

1. Search for vacant position
2. Apply for position
3. Attend interview
4. Convince employer that I am the most qualified applicant
5. Sign contract
6. Work

... steps 2-4 are a lot easier to pass through with summa cum laude grades, by the way.

IMNSHO, the entire concept of getting a job based on "who you know" is almost always pure corruption.

And yes, as previously stated, the weight of the potato is absent in the poll... I was able to find an estimate of 375 grams for an "average" potato. As such, 26.667 "average" potatoes would be needed to exceed a weight of 10 (metric, I assume) tonnes.

The only job I held for many years, I got because the manager was something of a crazy person (I wasn't aware of this at the time). He surrounded himself with an interesting cast of characters, friends (and friends of friends), offbeat people who stood out, and did things for strange arbitrary reasons (promoting people for the hell of it, including myself). I got caught up in it.

After he left most of the people who worked under him jumped ship, I stuck around. Went through many more managers, most of whom told me upfront that they wouldn't have hired me.

I mostly kept the job through luck, punctuality (a ton of help from my partner at the time with that) and avoiding doing things that would get me outright fired. I frequently got the idea that people didn't want me around, and that I didn't really "fit in" with the company image, but I'm not really sure and have a tendency to misinterpret peoples actions and intentions.

I struggled every day. I left when we moved out of state.
