Well, good news....at long last. 8)

A week of other people getting job interviews and being left hanging had me rather depressed and accepting that it was over...they didn't want me...and they would let me go once they no longer needed the extra pair of hands.

I had a job interview for a security guard job. I had to take time off to go to it. Not long after letting them know I'd take a late lunch to do the interview, the CFO of the company called me in and let me know that they were keeping me permanently...if I still wanted it.

I wasn't interviewed because the opening(s) were in customer service, where they don't feel I'm a good fit. The idea, at this point, is to keep me in accounts payable (which I don't love, but it's what I've been doing for the last 3 months), and cross train me in billing. Maybe something I said in my letter with my resume triggered something, but normally, there is just one AP person. If she's sick or on vacation, her supervisor has to do her work...or let it back up until she returns. This way, they will have two trained people in AP who help out in other departments (her, customer service...me, billing).

The CFO apologized for not saying anything sooner, but she was uncertain about what exactly she was going to do with me, but the company did want to keep me permanently. I suppose the fact that I was looking for another job...presuming our time together was going to end soon, motivated her to say something more definitive than what she said the last time I asked.

I'd like to say I'm "happy," but with the depression I was in over the weekend and into this week believing the worst was going to happen, I'm more "relieved" than anything else. It's not a "great" job. The pay is marginal. There are benefits (don't know exactly how good they are...but better than no benefits), and the people are nice to work with.

I find now (in the last week) it's easier to handle working there. For the last 3 months, it's been one long interview...afraid to make mistakes, say or do the wrong thing. Very stressful. Now that I don't/didn't care about the outcome, I stopped trying to win people over and just got through the day doing what I had to do.

Nice! Glad you can finally stop thinking about it. And, it's nice that they want to keep you and use you in a way that's decent for you (backup to billing and not to customer service, score!).

It is especially important that the people are nice to work with.

Now, you can relax and feel secure.

And now another turn....

I asked about my official "start date" so I know when my benefits should kick in (30 days). Feedback is that they don't know yet.

???

I turned down a job offer elsewhere because they told me they were making me full-time, permanent. Is this them having second thoughts or just not able to put stuff on paper until they know exactly how to classify my position/department?

In my mind, they either want me or don't. Where they plan to put me is irrelevant. If they are not committed to making me permanent on the day they told me, then they should have said so.

My beef (other than the uncertainty of my status) is that there are about 3 new people who will get their benefits after being on for 30 days. I shouldn't have to wait until later than that since I've been there for over 3 months as a full-time temp.
