Dealing with over-stimulation at work
I remember her very well. She is definitely one of my favorite DS9 creations (along with her associated band of misfits).

To be honest, that episode made me uncomfortable in the same way that, like, AutismSpeaks does. It pushes the notion that we are broken or incomplete and that there's a cure or a fix out there. They saw her being nonverbal but knew her brilliance and instead of finding ways to interact with her, they decided that she was the problem and needed to be fixed. Better software to process all the extra stimulus would be great, but but I don't need to be fixed.
(DS9 has a lot of such uncomfortable episodes; the one where Quark had to have a sex change made me VERY uncomfortable; not just because of the inherent transphobia, but the playful portrayal of the sexual assault against him was honestly horrifying)

That is an interesting perspective on the episode. Thank you for sharing.

I had taken something different from it, in that I had felt broken my entire life, like there was something "wrong" with me and I couldn't figure out what, but with learning that I am autistic, I was able to come alive--as autistic, not trying to "fix" it, but explaining and accepting who I am.

is that that brilliant girl that worked with Julian Bashir and the other geniuses to calculate the odds of the Dominion winning the war/casualties, etc....???
it has been a LOOOOONG time, i'm very rusty

Yes, that is her. Serena Douglas. In the second episode in which she featured, Chrysalis, where the brilliant but cataleptic girl awakens and takes her place in society. I felt a kinship with that in learning that I was autistic; like the girl who was broken reclaimed her identity.
In the picture here she is looking at Julian and wondering what her bright future might hold.

I could relate strongly with that group.....and really enjoyed those episodes.
They also captured the fact that the "Normals" didn't know how to engage with the geniuses just as much as the geniuses didn't relate well to the "Normals".
This is art imitating life, in many ways.
