My first job was as a clerk at a auto repair shop for vintage cars. I didn't get my license until I was aroun 19 or 20. I was immensly afraid of driving and my parent's and other family members teasing didn't help any.

I had a lot of volunteering jobs and gigs before I started working but my first real job was at a batteries factory. (in Mexico) I was a line worker, very easy job, hated it and only worked 4 weeks during the summer, I was 16.
the little amount I made helped me pay a quarter of my tuition at a private school.
I got my first car and license at age 20
a 91 dodge sedan
now I drive an 03 Land Rover
I'm 32 and never got any traffic tickets, never broken the law

19 - packing ice cream cones.

Yes, though tecnically I never passed my drivers license exam. I honestly think they gave me my license because they were scared to get back in the car with me again :D

I've started working for my dad, when I was 16. I was painting fences and houses. I did that, until I was 20. I've started working at a factory, at the age of 20.

My first job was when I was 12, working for my brother's butcher's shop. I worked Saturdays 5am to 5pm, and was paid £4 and given 2lb sausages! Talk about exploitation. My first proper job wasn't until I was 27! I had been for dozens of interviews since leaving college (school to those of you in the US) at 18, but nobody wanted to hire me, and depite my best efforts, I found it impossible to get any casual work. Being partially-sighted (even only slightly) didn't help, but that's a different story...

I have never driven, and due to my minor vision problem, I never will. I envy those who can just get in their cars and go, while I'm at the mercy of the elements and public transport. But at the same time, I canfeel smug about not contributing quite so much to global warming!

When I was 18, I helped my father do plastering jobs.

I started my first job when I was 15(Maybe 14) working Construction for a family relative. I worked over the summer and it was basically like boot camp; lifting wood, drywall, and metal for hours oneend. The only upside was that I got stronger for the ladies when I went back to school!

I got my driver's license and car at 16. I was pretty happy because I got a red convertible and I passed my driver's license test on the first try(I completely failed the parking, hit every cone).

My first job was a work-study position at my university's foreign language lab. I did a lot of tape rewinding there. Out of college, it was a 2 day temp job packing books into boxes. AWFUL! I felt like I was being completely wasted. My first meaningful job didn't happen for 5 years after I got my Masters degree.

I do not drive at all.

I got my first job at age 19, it was for the engineering department for the city I lived in. All of my jobs have been in the public sector.

I have been driving since I was 21 (I am almost 28), and I love it!

Tim

My first real job was as a junior college English instructor. I was 29.

I don't drive, but I am seriously considering taking up learning again. The drivers here are so bad, though, that the idea scares me.

My first thought about getting my license was, "if they let me on the road, then how bad must everyone else be.: Though really my trouble was due to nervousness, not necessarily bad driving (though I did almost give the one examiner a heart attack when I took my mom's warning to not slow down at all when making a turn during the test to hear. Apparently they don't like it when you attempt to turn at 45 miles per hour)

I got my first job at 17 as a fabric cutter/cashier at JoAnn Fabrics. I got my driver's license a few months later. Then I went away to college, but I worked there during the summers. I still love fabric, but I now hate acrylic fur and polyester felting even more. I don't condemn all polyester fabrics, though, some are okay.

I am 32. I don;t drive. I guess my first job (aside from babysitting) was as lunchtime help for a sandwich shop, at the age of 16...

My first REAL job out of high school was in the Deli at Whole Foods at age 18...
I worked there for a little over a year. I think that is where I realised how "different" i was compared to other people my same age..and from people in general. I realised how little I understood other people and whatnot...but this was years before I knew what hte autistic spectrum was...I was just a weird person...

That was a fun year....I ended up getting "special treatment" for being different.....and then I lost the job after being stalked by my very "aspie-like" boss....(i couldn't work in the same department as him and none of the other departments wanted to hire me)

First job was commercial diver at 18. Cold, wet, physically exhausting... but then i got to float under a ship in the dark by myself, total quiet apart from the hiss of air and tinker with very large expensive machinary.... loved it. Still dive for fun.

Passed my driving test on the 3rd attempt (the whole experience was a nightmare, all three times). Passed my trailer test at 20 on the first go (again a nightmare). Passed my motorcycle test at 23 on the second attempt. Both were ok, even the one i failed, maybe because you cant see the examiner, and you certainly dont have to talk to him :?

I was 15 and a half when I got my first part-time job and I worked as a shop assistant in a newsagent. I only got it because my Mum and sister already worked there. I was paid a pittance (too young for minimum wage) and treated like crap. However, I then went back a few years later, just because it seemed easier than going through interviews.

I've never even tried to drive a car (I'm 22). My Mum never had one so never really had the opportunity and lessons are too expensive. I quite like buses now though, as long as I have my MP3 player.
