HR won't tell if you were fired, but they can say if the company would hire you again. Most HR people won't touch that, either. They mostly give job title and periods worked. Some give the wage while others consider that too sensitive. Anything that could get the company sued is blocked.
If a prospective employer gets your former manager's name, they can track that person down and get "off the record" data and opinions. You may not get to respond to it. Most employment applications allow you to state that they may NOT contact a former manager. Also, giving the manager's name is optional. Give them the head of HR instead. I tell people my employment agreement bars me from giving that information. Some places have turned me down, some appreciate my integrity.
