Two options. Either 1. specialize in the material culture of your areas of interest in history, or 2. build a solid hobby which would be your main interest and get some low brain part time job that you can do for a little cash.
1. Write books or sell books dealing with history. Open a second hand book store with a good history section and a small antiques and curios section/display/theme. Get into antique restoration or reproduction. Become a specialist supplier to as many historical interest groups as you can identify. Supply re-enactors, leather workers, experimental archaeologists, etc with books, tools, lectures, etc.
Or you can learn everything you can about your geographical area, it's history, etc and build a tourist destination. A building with displays, stories, reproductions for sale, and host events that become part of official state or national tourist events listings.
2. Become a re-enactor, experimental archaeologist, reproducer of cultural artifacts, whatever rings your bell... and mow lawns or deliver pamphlets in letter boxes to earn enough $ to fund your lifestyle without intruding.
One thing I'm becoming more aware of for myself is that I'm cripplingly reliant on other peoples approval and what 'outside of myself' thinks is right or correct. I'm forever seeking 'the answer' backed up by outside confirmation. It occurs to me that this is the wrong approach and I now need to close my approval borders and look to my own approval. I'm thinking it will pay dividends for me, and you might want to consider it for yourself. By all means use other people for information and mentoring, but not for permission or approval in every little thing.
