i've never been the type to kiss the a**es of superiors at work, yet i have known many co-workers who were obviously not the best workers, yet were loved by management due to their a** kissing. this has always bothered me, to see managers/supervisors praising their employees for the wrong reasons. i have seen a lot of lazy people that obviously weren't the best at their job being awarded at company meetings. this only seems to lower morale for those people like myself, who simply come to work to get their job done as best as they can. i'm not saying i expect rewards or recognition for my own work, but i've seen a lot of hard working people passed over when it comes time to give out the "employee of the month" award.

Well, as hard as it is for people who dont enjoy that kind of socialization, that is what the workplace expects. I have been told that "doing a good job" means more than performing your work tasks. It can also include socializing with your coworkers because socialization is supposed to increase morale, job satisfaction and overall company productivity.

I guess that the managers love the attention, and the power they believe comes with their position.

Im with you; I'd rather just work and do the job i was told to do...in many cases im useless at the start and I end up mastering my job. At KFC, a fastfood chain, as a teenager i was completely useless and often laughed at...yet I still turned up and worked, I went home and tried to understand how things worked there so I could build up a "picture" .

However, no matter how well I did my job, it was the other teenagers who went out and socialized at parties that the managers was interested in (your right to think: isnt there probably a massive age difference, there was, and the managers liked the young ones; and they say we have problems =P) for them, it was ok to share smokes, party stories, and gerenally interact more on a social level...they could take extra breaks, whereas I would never go beyond 10mins.

However, KFC got into such a state that is workers often stole from work and the managers let it go, theyre training became inadequate and they didnt have the staff on the weekends to cover all the "sickies".

Also, can I add that I find many people try to make work a "home away from home" and try to socialize there as much as possible, many people i know who work in the Hospitality industry claim that the drama of work takes off the boredom of the job...although i think it might be closer to the boredom of their lives, if i might be so bold.

I think part of the issue is that most manager have no idea on how to determine if a worker is doing a good job or not. They have:

1) Been trained by their higher-up that brown nosing is expected (I have wondered a few times how some of those really high manager can walk straight)

2) Have not been trained properly at all

3) They do not understand your job (this is mostly in white collar areas, especially the computer field (Pointy Hair Boss)).

These managers then fall back to the only things that they know how to measure, brown-nosing.

I think it's more a question of finding an environment that accepts you on your merits. Some places will do this and there you will get on well and some places do not.

Brown-nosing individuals will always get on even if they lack talent or skills, they will irritate you but you don't have to work for them.

In my last job I worked for such an individual, zero talent for the job but the worlds greatest suck up, but now it's such a relief not to work for someone like that I'm almost glad I did experience it, as it makes life seem so much better now.

since i started this thread i've just gotten a job in a factory. the great thing is that there seems to be little room for kissing your managers' a**es. your work speaks for yourself..this is the fiorst job i've had where i feel like my supervisor appreciates me for my hard work and not for what i have to say to them. i've been there only three days and already they have told me they are very pleased with my work.
