You have to find a boss that accepts and likes you. At least that's how it is for me. I don't care how good I am at a job, or how much I like it- if the boss doesn't like me, sooner or later it's adios.

More pointers:

Work for your boss, not for the company - he or she is the one who decides your assignments, your raises and bonuses, and your working conditions.

Never embarrass the boss and always be honest with him or her.

Occasionally "take the fall" for your boss, so that he or she looks better to his or her superiors (who usually could not care less about you, anyway). If your boss is worth working for, then your boss will cover for you, as well.

I don't think that's the trick to keeping a job. I just think that's a prerequisite for keeping a job.

I don't think most people even think about it. Conventional wisdom says as long as you boost the bottom line, and get the job done, your boss should like you. That's certainly not been my experience- where as most people have wiggle room because everyone pretty much accepts them and overlooks the inevitable mistakes, I have to be damn near perfect to stay at a job. I've never heard anyone emphasize the importance of being liked by your boss.

I have no trouble keeping jobs when i get them. Every job teaches you something, focus on getting something out of whatever you're doing and your single mindedness will take care of the rest.

I cant tell if my boss likes me but he seems happy with my work compared to his previous employees... but sooner or later im going to have to expand on what i can do for the business... then i think hes not going to be so proud of me...
