My Job Is Brining Me Down
I've worked there a year and a half. It's had its ups and downs, but for so long I felt that overall we were progressing. We went from 3 guys working in a basement pumping out code all day to having a big office downtown with about 9 employees. From there things went downhill. The boss stopped caring, he never came to the office. That affected the other employees and they started slacking too, they became so unhappy with it that they all found new jobs and moved on.
Now its basically just me left, and a boss that is never around. The only thing that keeps me here is that I have received raises steadily, and there's always that hope that the next product we pump out will be the next Facebook or something and we'll be rich. Lately that hope has been fading away for me.
I started working from home, no point in driving to the office if I'm going to be the only one there. At first I enjoyed it, got to sleep in a bit more, save some gas, make lunch/snacks when needed, and most of all I got to see my girlfriend a bit more. Now she has left me and I'm faced with the decision of staying at home, by myself or going to the office and sitting there by myself all day.
I have never been socially driven, in fact I've always avoided people as best as possible. I had always thought you could dump me on a desert island and I'd live out my life in complete happiness, because I didn't need anyone. Now I'm realizing that I need people more than I thought.
I'm thankful I have activities outside of work that get me out of the house 4 or 5 nights of the week, but there are still those days where I don't leave the house at all.
I really don't know what to do. It took me forever to find a job in my field, and I've been sending out applications and resumes lately with no luck. The more I start to hate my job, the worse my performance gets. I'm worried I'll get fired before I find something new, and then I will really be screwed.
From the title I thought you work with pickles.
I understand your situation and I am in a similar one. I set myself up in life to avoid people (no roommates, non-social type of work etc.) but now I realize that the social isolation that I spent so much time working towards is not that good for me. I think it would be best if I was in an environment where I am surrounded by people but that I don't have to interact too much with them. Unfortunately I don't think that exists.

I think it's time to look for another job in a related field. If you are feeling down enough to talk about it here, it might get to a point where the good days outnumber the bad days. I felt something like you in my previous job, I hung on because I liked the work but not the boss' style. I ended up being told by the boss to quit a few months ago when she decided she didn't like me anymore (I think). It's still haunting me now, though I am in another job, doing the same work but in a way that's doesn't stress me out so much.
Good luck, hope you get though this. ![]()
