Ok so I'm getting a little bit frustrated because I am looking up jobs.....on craigslist at the moment but I will move on to other internet sources after that but the number of jobs that specify I need a drivers license and a reliable vehicle to apply is frustrating me. I mean I don't have a drivers license just a valid permit and it's unlikely I will have a car anytime soon not to mention with the stress of pretty much being screwed if I can't find a job and everything else I really am not up to taking the test for a drivers license not to mention I probably cannot afford the fee just yet considering I will be needing a new minutes card for my phone, enough cash to cover the bus fare for until I find a job.

So I guess my question is does this sort of thing frustrate anyone else who does not drive? and why do all the dog walking, pet sitting, and cleaning jobs require me having a car those are jobs I probably could do. :wall: I mean hell I'll clean freaking toilets if I have to I just need something that does not require a car.

Just ask.

If you can get wherever you need to be without a car then just explain that, the worst they can say is no.

You may as well try, right?

I think that the reason many jobs require these is twofold. The first is obvious, in order to do a job you need to be able to reliably get to the job every day. If you are able to do that without being able to drive then I'm sure it would be no problem for you to apply, you could explain in an interview if asked. The second reason is a lot of jobs use your driver's license to run a background check, verify your identity/state of residence, age, etc. Sometimes that sort of information is required for bookkeeping or other things.

Well that's the thing the bus is not the most reliable, so if they say I need my own vehicle I don't think they are referring to taking the bus......but I doubt all jobs require a drivers license it's just frustrating because I already have enough issues interfering with my ability to hold a job and now the not having a car or license is an issue on top of that.

Well I have a proper ID, its just a permit and not a license.

I need a list of jobs for losers with no car or college degree...hmm maybe I can look one up on google. Too bad I can't donate plasma, I weigh under 110 pounds so I can't but there's gotta be other possibly unpleasant ways to make income other than selling your blood at the plasma center for around 60$ I've read.

My mother never had a license. She has worked at a hospital, a laundry, a fast food place, and as a cleaner.

I have an aunt that never had a license and has worked in many places, mostly cashier/retail type jobs.

I don't have a license either.

Well good I guess there might be hope, uhh it's just very frustrating but there's gotta be something that does not require a vehicle in my area.

Welcome to my nightmare.

I have a car with expired, out-of-state tags, a driver's license which is suspended over a stupid broken tail-light ticket that I have chronically been unable to pay and has snowballed into an avalanche of the absurd.

Now, if only I could get a job, then I could have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license, and therefore have the ability to commute to and from work. Catch 22. Circular reasoning. I hate it.

That kinda reminds me of considering getting on disability.....well I need a job to give me income to pay the psychiatrists to get an official diagnoses and the necessary paper work I would need to get approved for SSI :wall: Not to mention now I gotta let this hellish bought of insanely severe depression pass before i can even go out and look for jobs, though I can look online for now I'm just not going into places to apply when I feel like this it would not be good for anyone. Usually though I am moderately depressed but sometimes It gets quite severe and that can last from anywhere to a week or a month before I'm back to my more familiar moderately depressed self.

I know exactly how you feel. That's roughly where I'm at right now.

It bothers me that a job would FORCE you to drive. Several staff at my school (past and present) don't drive, but the transit is pretty good here.

What if you had a medical condition that made you unable to drive? (I might probably have a hard time because I have motor issues). When I was 9, I went on a Disney ride where kids could drive cars and I kept hitting the curve and crashed into the cars in front of me when we stopped at the end. Most of the kids my age were not actually having those problems. That is, the ones I saw on the ride of course.

Also, what about people who can't afford a reliable car? I'd assume a lot of cheap cars would be unreliable.........

before i began pursuing disability, i spent alot of time looking at jobs, even though i knew i wouldnt be able to do them; mainly because i dont want anyone to say i never tried.
but yeah, alot want you to have a drivers license and have a car and be able to do certain things. to be honest, even if i had a car i wouldnt be doing company business in it. they can provide that as far as im concerned unless they reimberse for things like upkeep and gas.
I hate driving, gave me panic attacks. I tried for over 5 years to get my license until i finally gave up. i never liked it, and to be honest have no desire for it.
im surprised with all of the global warming crap people talk about there isnt a huge no driving movement going on, and a promotion for more public transportation, which doesnt exist where i live, as far as I know.

I don't really care about the environment if it inconveniences me and I've seen people use "being good for the environment" as an excuse to get away with things, like the Sims 3 games no longer coming with instruction books (good for the environment supposedly) yet they did stupid things like release a new town in store in a case that was empty with nothing in it but a code to download it. The could have put the code on a game card and not wasted so much packaging.

Even with my lack of caring I can tell many environmentalists "I have a smaller carbon footprint than you. I don't own a car." Nearly everywhere I go I walk and I occasionally take the bus.

Yes, it is frustrating. I recently got my learners' permit. It doesn't help yet, but it's the first step.

Even if you can put only $5 aside a week, that's $5 towards the fee that you wouldn't have had otherwise. It might take a long time, but you'll get there eventually. Start now! If you put it off until next week, that's a week longer that you'll have to wait for your licence.

Are there any businesses in your area that are close enough to where you live that you can walk there?

If there are then ask yourself what jobs they might have that you can do. Cleaning, retail work etc. Print up some flyers and stuff them into the letterboxes of the local businesses.

The look at the houses around you. Could you do work for the people there in their homes? Dog walking, lawn mowing, cleaning, babysitting. Print up some more flyers for those things and stuff some more letterboxes.

If you are offering to do work for people in their houses, make sure that you are safe. Tell somebody where you are going and when you will be back home.
