I got on DSP a year ago and it wasn't any more difficult than anything else I've ever done with Centrelink, though I think there were a few more steps involved than getting on Newstart.
I didn't use a psychiatrist. My psychologist made the diagnosis and then he alerted my GP, who then looked into it, agreed, then made it official. I got the DSP form from Centrelink, my GP filled in his bits, I filled in mine and handed it in to centrelink. A C-link person interviewed me, a C-link panel reviewed it, and I was put on DSP.
Don't HAVE to look for work anymore, but I choose to.
