Hello,
Anyone know a good psychiatrist in Sydney who knows about AS? I have struggled since adulthood with keeping work and I am getting worse with age (I'm 37). My partner split up with me and he was my sole support. I am afraid that I will become homeless. I think I need to apply for the DSP but have read it is even more difficult now.

Please help?

Khvidd

I got on DSP a year ago and it wasn't any more difficult than anything else I've ever done with Centrelink, though I think there were a few more steps involved than getting on Newstart.

I didn't use a psychiatrist. My psychologist made the diagnosis and then he alerted my GP, who then looked into it, agreed, then made it official. I got the DSP form from Centrelink, my GP filled in his bits, I filled in mine and handed it in to centrelink. A C-link person interviewed me, a C-link panel reviewed it, and I was put on DSP.

Don't HAVE to look for work anymore, but I choose to.

They clamped down really hard, starting from this year. (well, last year august sometime)

Previously, several afflictions could incrementally increase the number of points you received. Now it's only if it is one main serious impairment...

You also have to go in for periodic checkups now, to see if you have improved.

As someone who believes the party is over, I expect it will get worse as govs have to cut more costs and tighten everything up.

Listening to Abbott on the radio the other day. He's at it again. If he gets to be the next PM, it sounds like he'll kick everyone off DSP if they're not in a coma, while quadriplegic, with an IQ of -16.

Don't want to go back on Newstart. It's a hell of a pay cut.
