Right now I am working at a retail store, besides the facts I am the only one who does my jobs at night and cant make friends with the other workers (most are roommates or high school friends to begin with) I like it. When I was hired I did disclose and told them three times (interview. Hiring and first day) that I can not work the music area. They told me it would not be a problem because I would be in the movies area only. Last month for some unknown reason music is now part of movies. I reminded them AGAIN I can not work music. It's not wont its can't. Again they said no worries I won't have to do anything but clean it when we close. Besides some other workers having melt downs because I would pass customers off on them for music questions (just told them to take it up with the boss and leave me alone) I had almost no problems with the job....tonight my area boss told me "it's time for you to be cross trained in music, the higher ups want all video to be able to handle music" I reminded her again it's my only request not to do music and even closing it pushes me close to a melt down(people are still in music when I close it and I fear being asked a question) she just smiled and said it stresses her out as well to be over there as well and walked off!

I cover every area in the store I can. Heck I put away the adult movies we have and I always have to wash my hands after. So am I asking to much to NOT be in the one area I can not handle?

Why can't you handle the music area? What's the reason that you cannot deal with it?

As for having to learn it, I don't think you can do very much about it if management has decided that everyone in video must also handle the music area. The only think you could do is ask to be transferred to another area alltogether. If handeling the music area is required now for other employees in the area you are in, I don't believe they have to make an exception for you, because that would require bringing in another person to work at the same time as you, just for the music, wouldn't it?

Also, why do you wash your hands after putting up the porn movies? I wouldn't think that there would be anything on the box it's in. I'd imagine that guys usually clean up after watching it while it's still in the player, then put it back in the box to bring back to the store.

Not being mean, just curious.

I have never liked music. Growing up music has always been a pain for me. The music area makes no sense to me at all. It's the genre is not alpha, the music is alpha by date not title. And so many artists have such odd names I cany even begin to guess spelling. I hear the words "is anyone in music" on the radio I change channels so I do not have to answer. To me working in music is like asking me to do a heart transplant. I already have asked three times to be moved into a different area. I read more books then all the people in books combined and I have sold more video games and systems then any other person in the store. I have the best up sale in movies(these are all what my boss has told me) so why put me in my worst area?

As for the porn and washing my hands. They are new but I do not believe in porn movies. To me porn is "we will keep giving you money till you do what I say" it's fake and heart less and something I find sick. Plus we keep it right next to the kids movies...

So, it would be difficult for you to put the music in the right place or help someone find the music they were looking for? That honestly makes no sense to me, having it done by date. Every single place I've ever seen music sold, it was organized alphabetically, by artist name, and it was also sometimes divided into genre. If I were you, I'd just tell the boss "I don't know about music because I don't listen to it, so I probably won't be much help." I'd also make sure the customers know that as well. I'd imagine ringing up their sales would be the same as anywhere else, but putting out new stock would be difficult if you didn't know when something came out, unless you are supposed to look on the label.

As for the porn, well whether you believe in porn or not, they really exist ;-) As for it not being "real", they aren't real. That wouldn't be as interesting. I have a good friend who has done a few porn movies way back in the day and he said it's nothing like you think. It's in a room with a lot of people and hot lights and somebody is off camera telling you what to do, etc. He said it's pretty good money though, and thats why most people do it. Unless someone is drugged, they have a choice of whether or not to do the porn, and I see no problem with someone choosing to do it, even though I've never found porn appealing at all. It's wierd that they have them next to the kid movies though! Most places here either have them behind the counter or in a different room.

I have no idea how the music is done really...I just know I don't understand it and know its a trigger for me. I plan to tell my boss more and more times I do not know music and continue to send music questions off to other people. I did not ask for music, I did not interview for music and unless they put me in a different area or fire me I will continue to be the best video person they have.

I know they exist  but so do doctor who sonic screw drivers, does not mean they are real. Just like you said its good money and that's why I don't like it. There is a difference of people playing because they enjoy it vs people do it because they need it...it's a dirty job by both meanings.
