In our lunch room or whatever it's called there're two tables, and during lunch today I was seated at one of them and at the other table was a group of people I work with. They were having a conversation and I found some things they said funny. My question here is, is it appropriate to laugh a little to yourself at the jokes they were telling?

And is it appropriate to cut into their conversation if I feel my subject may be of any value to that conversation?

No, it's not appropriate.

I've done this plenty of times myself, and I know from the reactions I get that they don't like other people butting in. :(

People are so uptight.
