Is it like "it's not 'right' to just sit around and annoy your parents and take space"?

And you want respect/honor?

That's basically it, right?

I never did. I started thinking about it more lately because my mother won't be around forever to support me but I haven't been able to find anything yet.

I guess you would feel motivated when you want to move out and start your own life and be independent in your own place.

My motivation to work came from belonging to a family who had a strong work ethic. It never occurred to me not to work ...

My mom kicked me out when I was 18 because she hated my boyfriend. I was already working so my only hardship was finding an apartment I could afford. I was terrified at the thought of being on my own but once I was out it was way easier than I thought it would be.

When I got my first car, at 15, and needed money for parts to make it work properly. The car was free and so were it's problems, but fixing it cost me everything I made. However, it also taught me how to fix cars and their basic systems. I am now 38 and that same car is still in my possession, sitting in the garage.

When my dad said if I wanted a cell phone I had to pay for it.

I went out and got a job and paid for it.

If you don't work, you get to starve, be homeless, and not have a life.

No stuff, no house, no food, no car, no travel, no education, no nothing.

Unless you bum off family/friends or welfare, that is. If you have zero chance of ever working do to extreme medical issues beyond the scope of 99% of the population,... by all means, accept help.

Otherwise, why work?

So you can make a life for yourself.

To be responsible.

To not use people and society to foot your bill when you have any other option.

To learn and work, becoming a contributing member of society-- both in terms of knowledge, career successes, taxes, etc.

To afford what I want and afford a better life for myself, with money for entertainment.

What other options are there? Not work, wasting time doing nothing but sitting around? Not work, ending up hungry and homeless?

Beautiful poem, sir.

I did not. When I was 16 (the age you are legally capable of working in my country), I was too antisocial and scared to look for jobs. When I was 18, my mother found a place that was hiring and almost literally dragged me there. I was hired, I got over my anxiety, I learned to deal with people and I really loved the feeling of independence derived from having my own wage.

I worked in two other places afterwards. Nowadays, I cannot imagine living without a job. Since my last job (an internship), I spent 1 month and 20 days looking for a new one. It was more than enough for me to despair. Fortunately, I found a new job 2 days ago.
