Hi

After doing many jobs and not finding one that is quite right I am thinking about learning sign language and being a deaf signer. I am a quiet aspie and have the feeling that this would be a good career for me. I have got past experience of teaching and being a TA and feel that I would really enjoy doing this job. Just thinking about taking the first steps by learning BSL and seeing how things progress.

Are there any other aspies that are doing or have done this job? Is it a good job for an aspie? Any pros and cons would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I think it's kinda similar to what I do, which is translation - or rather, I have found a lot of overlap between sign language interpreting and translation!
Search google for blogs by sign language interpreters - I personally think it is a superb career choice and you will be in very high demand, provided you work at it - you will get paid better than the average language interpreter! :)
Excellent choice in my humble opinion.

It was something I was considering doing, especially as I pick up signing quickly, and for places like court you get paid a lot. I'd certainly learn it, then decide if you still want to be an interpreter later.

There's a lot to consider, including getting to know the Deaf culture, but you'll find that out as you learn. And if at the end of it you decide you don't want to pursue that path, well, at least you've learned a cool language!
