I have a chronic condition, on top of being super awkward socially, that I really need treatment for. I can't get insurance cuz I haven't popped out any babies and my condition isn't recognized by the gov't as a disability. So, I am trying to get this job... but I'm hoping so hard that if I do the insurance kicks in right away... because I can't work full time without treatment. And I'm afraid I won't get it because the one woman kept giving me weird looks while she was interviewing me. I don't think I said anything too off the wall, but then again I know interviewers are known for being hypercritical and analyzing body language, which I'm not very good at.
In the meantime, I may have an ear infection, but I can't tell since my chronic pain often affects my ears. I really don't wanna go to the ER since they practically scoffed at me the last time I went and it turned out to be just another chronic pain symptom. And they made me sit there in pain for several hours while scoffing at me and then telling me, "Well, whatever it is, it isn't serious enough for you to come here." But since I'm uninsured, there's nowhere else I can go, either... I really need this job.

This may sound odd but I would go to another emergency room and tell the physician your situation and ask to speak to a social worker or case manager. That person may be able to connect you with services that can help you. You are likely eligible for Medicaid. Hopefully, under "Obamacare" you might be able to get some help with the medical issues. Unfortunately, you may even be eligible for welfare, but if it helps you recover, it would not be all bad. Then you can look for a job.

It wouldn't be unfortunate to be eligible for Medicaid. I would accept that coverage quite happily. But I'm not eligible. Because it's not a recognized condition. I've already tried. No one gives a crap. They all figure because the pain won't kill me any time soon that it's not worth treating. They prescribe me OTC painkillers, and then when I explain that I have tried all of them, they just shrug. I have gotten treatment and diagnosis, but it was from a dentist because my condition is considered dental even though it is actually an issue with the joints. I have TMJ disorder. His treatment, which he claims has helped 99% of his patients live without or with very little pain, has hit a brick wall for me, and I still feel like I've been punched in the face all the time--especially when I get sick or try to exercise or work for long hours.
The ER doesn't care because they are only care about whether it's an emergency. Obamacare isn't going to expand Medicaid until 2014. I have to get a job to get insurance--there is no other way.

I don't mean this negatively, who told you / how do you know you aren't eligible for Medicaid? If it's because you've done the research yourself and realize your primary condition isn't covered, you might be surprised at how having coexisting conditions changes things. Spectrum related disorders in combination with ANY comorbid issues are far more likely to be approved than single diagnosis applications. You might be able to find an autism support organization that can refer you to a law office - they're the ones that best know how the statutes are interpreted in the real world.

I do know what you're going through, though - I'm in a similar boat. I'm getting low cost counseling at a low cost clinic and using a vocational service to help find a position to get real insurance and real help to get a 'real' job. I wish you lots of luck!

Have you applied for Medicaid? I recently got it. I know it can be harder to get it in different states.

I think insurance companies are no longer able to deny coverage due to preexisting conditions thanx to Obamacare so if you could spend a little money every month or if you could get a family member or friend to pay the insurance bill for a while(promise to make paying them back a priority 1ce you have a job) some doc offices are accommodating about paying them for what the insurance doesn't cover; they don't want patients to file medical bankruptcy so they offer payment plan options

You can't be denied for pre-existing conditions (One of the few things good about Obamacare)

I would try to go to your social services office and see what can be done to help you.

Worst comes to worst, call around to doctors and ask if they will see you. I know a doctor who makes it a point to see a certain number of uninsured patients for free every month as part of his Hippocratic oath.

What did your dentist try for TMJ?

I applied after someone told me to try it. The case worker took about 5 minutes to tell me that I was not eligible. She said she would withdraw my application, but she didn't--got a letter a few weeks later saying I'd been denied.

Also, I am not diagnosed with ASD. I'm pretty certain I have it, but the only free resource for mental health in my area only has counselors who can't diagnose anything. And I have absolutely no money to spend on health insurance--plus, even if I did, there are not approved treatments for my TMJ, which is the main thing holding me back besides my extreme quirky honest reclusive personality. If I would have extra money, I would be better served just paying the doctors out of pocket than for insurance since anything I could get with a pre-existing condition would cost somewhere near $600/mo. and would still have a high deductible, plus wouldn't cover treatments such as massage therapy or unapproved pain management therapies (since, like I said, there are no approved treatments for TMJ),

daytime oral appliance in addition to a nighttime bite guard. I think he was full of crap about them being as effective as he said... but I had to try because he was the only person in the area that didn't automatically tell me I'm crazy and need to "relax" when I first saw him... he's the only one who listened to me and approached the problem logically. he has been honest with me about the fact that there's nothing he can do for me beyond this... and it did help. I can eat and talk again. Just can't exercise or work long hours. No guarantee that it will continue to work, though. It seems like it is progressively losing efficacy... seems like it displaced my muscles and joints, and they are slowly getting used to the new position they are in. I'm concerned that the new positioning may damage my muscles and joints, but as I said... no other options right now, and I would starve to death if I stopped wearing it.

I hear that some dentists think TMJ can be treated by trimming down some of your back teeth. Also that other dentist say that's reckless and crazy.

Must suck. I have mild TMJ from time to time. Hate it.
