I just wanted to say something positive about my experiences so far, incase it might encourage others who have similiar challenges.

I applied for Voc Rehab over a year ago at the urging of my therapist and DR. I was too depressed to follow through with the phone calls to even begin their processes, and it was for the best. It took me several months to get my head right with proper medicine and therapy. I wanted to rush, but I had to let the processes take time and get myself sorted out.

This year, 2012, I was able to follow through with the phonecalls for Voc Rehab to essentially get my case worker to provide the next steps I needed. Once I got my own employment services worker things improved 100%.

My case worker helped me create a new resume highlighting my strengths and skills. She introduced me to a place that I now volunteer 2-3 times weekly, in my case it is a nursing home. I was scared at first, but now I love it. The residents are just wonderful, even when they are cranky and can't help it.

The volunteering is intended to get my foot in the door at the nursing home, as well as to act as a good reference for any jobs I apply for. My employment services worker is signing me up for a class in Feeding Assistance, a job which I can see myself doing in the near future (it is feeding the residents of the nursing home).

It hasn't been all perfect, my depression and anxiety flared up big time for an entire week and I had to call in sick and was worried they would be mad or my employment worker would be mad, but no one was mad. They understand and see that I am making progress.

So that is my experience, and I would not have thought I would be so happy to say that I spent my day volunteering there, but I am happy. I feel like I can do something that helps people. It is a good feeling.
