Hi
I have now working at a research station for 4 years as an academic employee (programmer). My boss is pushing me to take an PH.D. One of my concern is that most of the PHD students here do work far more than 40 hours a week. And because of my AS I require some down time each day and I also need to sleep a lot because of my AS. Because of those 2 thing I doubt that I can but in the extra hour that is requred to finish the program in time.
Every person do have a talk with there boss every year and mine is coming op next month. Should I disclose my AS so I can avoid some misunderstanding or should I just try to take the PHD and see if I can handle it.
It should also een mention that my current job is without any time limit and a PHD is a job for 3 year (with approximate same salery as I have now)
Any thought or recommendation?

I personally have a good experience with telling my boss about my ASD (for different reasons though). He is really understanding and quite accomodating.

Seeing as you've already worked there for four years and your boss sees enough potential in you to go for a PHD I don't think there's much to lose for you.

If time was not an issue, would you want to go for it? Or do you have other reservations?

If they are aware of your diagnosis then maybe they can provide accomodations such as extra time?

Time is basically the only big issue. I have a smaller issue with writing but I think that I can handle it if there was enough time for it.

There has been a few cases here where people need more time that normal (because of stress and depression). Normal they get a sick leave when it is worse, little extra time (1-2 month) with full pay and up to a year without payment.

A PHD is seen as a normal job with a time limit and dont a study like in other contries
