Sounds like industrial design, a profession I've worked for one provider of and considered jumping into myself. My interest in it began with cars, but moved on to mobile computing and lots of sports gear; in my case bikes and skis. I don't buy anything for myself if it isn't an ergonomic masterwork. The only two exceptions to this rule in my case would probably be Vans shoes and cheap laptops. I think you'll do great at it if you too have this habit of acquainting yourself with good design - sometimes it gets pricey but the background knowledge can really pay; I'd have better chances of becoming a pro athlete than I would a car designer - and I already have my sights on an automotive electronics firm for my next job. People have lofty expectations for most of us when they realize our talents, so building a resume in anything close to this is tricky but worthwhile, your friends probably won't believe your level of background knowledge in manufacturing.
