Confused about Job Application Process

I had a call out of the blue from a man claiming he knew a friend of a family member who told them I was looking for software developer work.

He told me he works in a place where they need a developer and could I send my CV. So i sent my CV.

Now I have had an email from someone else in his company asking me how much money I am looking for.

I don't know what to say because I have been out of work for a while and don't want to give a crap figure or a figure too high etc.

Also because they approached me rather than me apply to them I am reluctant to discuss money before I even know anything about this job.

Any advice?

You could write back and say you'd like to know a little bit more about the job so you can make an accurate estimate.

I'd try to avoid talking about money initially.

The real question should be about your talents and opportunities with them. If their only concern is finding the cheapest possible person, then it probably isn't much of an opportunity.

However, someone with little experience may not have much wriggle room there.

One thing you may want to do is surf the net and find out other software positions... see what is being offered and try to make a ballpark estimate. That is only if you absolutely cannot get out of talking money.

I am very experienced and was earning a high salary in my last job. But I have been away for a few years and I'm not really bothered about earning lots of money, I just want a job that is going to give me spare time to pursue my other interests.

Get a job description, then look at what other jobs are paying and make an offer.

It's not uncommon for employers to leave the salary open to negotiations.
