Managing an Internship Offer

I am looking for an internship over the summer, and already received one written offer. The internship does not start until two months from now, and while it's a great organization based on its merits, there are a few things coming along that might be better. One job in particular is likely to make an offer in the next month or so (they said they'd hire me, but they are public sector and their HR moves slowly). I might accept the current offer I have, and then rescind the acceptance if I find something better over the next two months.

Would that hurt my professional reputation?

Is the internship paying?

In this day and age, there is no loyalty from the employer to the employee.

If you want to accept the internship, do so.

If before it starts, the other place wants you to start with them, and it's better for you, accept it and personally let the party offering the internship know that something came up and that you will not be able to do it. Be sure to thank them for considering you and offering you the opportunity.

As some would say, "You snooze, you lose." People who want you to start well into the future can't be surprised if life makes circumstances change before the start date.
