Hi, I am a girl who's 18 and getting my diploma in a couple of weeks. I am not going to college but I want to be independent, have my own money, and be able to move out as well as afford the bus (I can't drive). I have applied to lots of jobs but no one wants me. I can't do math or anything too physical.

What would be a good type of job to apply?

Being able to afford to move out could be very difficult with your first job. Do you have any job or volunteer experience? Which part of the country do you live in? Some industries are regional.

If you have the aptitude, becoming an apprentice in the trades can help you earn good money. You can find out which trades are accepting apprentices by looking for the employment section of your state website.

There's also Job Corps.

I believe Job Corps might be bad for Aspies. It's a dormitory-type situation that's a cross between summer camp and the army.

Why aren't you going to college? I did the same thing you did. I didn't go to college until age 36. I succeeded--but it's harder now. Where do you live? You can't live on your own working at McDonald's. I'd give this a little more thought.

I could identify with you. I think your feelings are so normal...a great sign that you're growing up. I hope your parents treat you well.

Ug, living with other people!

I moved out at 18 because I refused to pay rent to my parents.
Also suffering from a disability (MG) meant I couldn't do physical labor for long.
I ended up having to work 3 minimum wage jobs to do it (1 ft, 1pt and one call in).
Stock and inventory was the best for me, markets, so heaviest thing to lift was bottles of drinks or oil.

That's not sustainable long term. I got an associates and became an engineering librarian (my best description lol). Desk work was better for my health and my paycheck.

I had mental issues and my parents won't pay. I don't want to live with them because they treat me like I have no legal rights. But, most of all, I need money so I won't have them telling 18 year old me "no" when I feel like having ice cream or a new shirt. It makes me feel like C**p to be so useless.

I'm sorry you're going through this. Maybe you could work at McDonald's to get some spending money for yourself. If you and your parents have a low income, you could get financial aid for college--like TAP or BEOG. Or do Work-Study.

I know that feeling. Couldn't do ANYTHING, had to follow stupid rules (I'm a parent now and pretty firm, I'm not talking rebellion, I'm talking silliness).

You can only apply for those things if your parents fill out a FAFSA for you, if they won't or you're estranged, you can't apply for any of those programs until you're 22, or get married, whichever comes first.

Have you at least hit up craigalist? Dont be afraid to go for jobs a little out side of your comfort zone one jobs that you didnt even know existed until you read about them. Your at the point in your life where you should work a few weird jobs, it gives you a much better feel for adult life.

You could also look at a temp agency. Some of those temp work agencys are utter crap some of them are extremely professional and can place you in higher paying part time or full time temp to higher jobs. Summer is coming and there will also be a lot of season jobs out there right now.

I couldn't get aid. My parents are upper middle. It makes it more comfy to live with them but it's worse for my own ego.
