I was fired from my local supermarket. The management removed me from the schedule without telling me. They never sat down with me to explain what I did wrong.

I thought about calling corporate to try to get an explanation. But, I changed my mind considering that it was an unpleasant place anyways. I worked as a Clerk in the Produce department. Customers would ask me questions that I didn't even know the answer to. I would ask the other workers the question and they would exasperatedly answer me or basically tell me to get off their back.

Good riddance is all I have to say!

Sorry about that.

I was once fired from a bagel shop.

If you have a Costco nearby, that would be a decent place to work.

The nearest Costco is about an hour drive.

You'd be spending too much on gas----unless you can take public transportation there.

How about a BJ's? Or a Dollar Tree? I know these dollar stores are always looking for workers. You might do better stacking items, rather than working with the public.

There's no BJ's stores anywhere near me. There are a few Walmarts. I will probably find something.

Try for Walmart. It's probably better than at a supermarket.

They might make you a "greeter" or something.

Do you mind doing stock jobs?

I thought they removed the "greeter" positions at Walmart.

Maybe...but you could still do stock.

"At Will" hiring laws absolve employers from having to explain why you've been sacked. They don't even have to acknowledge that you asked.

On the plus side, there is no law that says you must give two weeks' notice of your resignation.

Many companies require two weeks notice though.

Like I said, it wasn't a pleasant place anyways. I am actually glad I am not working there now!

While many companies "require" two weeks' notice, this is rarely enforceable. Withholding pay, or threatening to withhold pay, if you don't submit two weeks' notice is illegal. If an employer does that to you, then it's lawyer time.

I am going to pick up my paycheck tomorrow. I will definitely lawyer up if they withhold my pay. I don't think I was fired because I didn't give a two week notice because I never shared any intention of leaving.

Would it still be illegal if I were fired for any other reason?

Fnord is right.

"At Will" involves the employer being allowed to fire you "at will."

There are some union jobs which are not pure "at will." The union jobs have more of European-type sacking/firing rules.

"Two weeks' notice" is something which is more a polite nicety than an actual requirement.

How long did you work there?

Are you positive you were fired, or is it possible they just messed up the schedule?

Yes....if they withhold your paycheck, that's illegal. I doubt they will do that.

Unless you are a unionized worker, the firing was almost certainly legal.

If you were fired on the basis of Age, Disability, Genetic Information, National Origin, Pregnancy, Race/Color, Religion, Sex or Gender Expression, then your firing was illegal.

If you were fired in retaliation for reporting Harassment or Unsafe Working Conditions, that is also illegal.

HOWEVER, "At Will" employers do not have to tell you why you were fired; but if you suspect that the firing was illegal, then your only recourse is to contact a lawyer or the Labor Relations Board in your state (or the equivalent if not in the U.S.).
