Does anyone have tips for how to advertise yourself if you're doing freelance work? I know that in part it's going to depend on what kind of work you're doing, but it seems like it might be hard to walk the line between needlessly inflating yourself and showing that you have something to offer.
I pretty much use my blog for that. I write articles to raise my profile, and I have a page there listing my previous work (articles I wrote or was quoted in, classes I assisted in, etc).
I can't stand people who just use everything as an opening to talk about their work... Been at parties where people handed out 'gifts' with their card or flyer in them, or Halloween bags for my kids with a flyer in them, or commenting on a social media post with a link to their amway business or whatever.
I saw a girl fundraising for a science trip and someone dweeb commenting "hey, buy stuff from my site XXXXXXXXX and I'll donate a portion to this fundraiser."
Stick to craigslist or your own site or LinkedIn or services offered ads/directories to say "hire me for gigs!", and, of course, if you're in a forum or have social media profiles, sure, have a link in your signature or on your profile back to your own site.
Almost all of the work that I've done has been referred to me by others. (Of course, I've never had more than 20% of my annual income from freelancing, so, I haven't needed to drum up work other ways, I'd love to hear other ideas from those who have... Of course, aside from the ones I criticized above.)
