One of my special interests is foreign languages.

I heard that translators are in high demand as far as employment goes. I was wondering which languages are in the highest demand--because I would like to see if I could do translation work part-time.

Tim

Living in Texas, I can very easily understand the need for Spanish translators.

Chinese might be the best bet. (High and increasing demand, and there are not all that many people around who are fluent in both English and Chinese.)

More people speak Spanish globally than any other language and it is also the fastest growing language in the world, though I'm sure there are needs for many others, too.

I agree. However, it takes years to become even remotely effective at being able to translate written Chinese, since their character system doesn't work like an alphabet. Spoken Chinese isn't too bad - I've started to try and learn a few things.

And I've heard that Mandarin Chinese is set to outpace Spanish in about 10 years. That's why I started to try and learn it.

Well, I figure that since Tim_Tex has an Aspie mind, then maybe he's like me in that complex things are easier to understand than simple things. This would be a great way for him then to make use of his Aspieness, because he'd pick up on Chinese much faster than most native English speakers. This, combined with the circumstance that Chinese is probably going to be the second most important language in the world very soon, makes it a good idea to go for, I think.

Maybe translators are in high demand but I doubt it. I speak german and chinese VERY well and can't seem to get a break even though i translated freelance when i lived in china. be careful if you want to go into this field, it's competitive and often requires specialized knowledge in a profession, eg law, engineering or medicine.

Spanish and Arabic would be your best bets.
You would easily land a job at some goverment department.

That is just nonsense. People need to quit telling each other that the language alone is enough to get you a good job. It's not. believe me, I know.

I didn't mean that.
It's just that being bilingual or trilingual will be taken into consideration, along with other skills, by a potential employer.

Oh. Well that's definitely true.
