I am on the verge of quitting my job. I work as a sales representative in a call center. I deal with people every day, and my stress is beyond my control. It has gotten to the point where I am in danger of experiencing a meltdown or shutdown daily, and my weekend is not enough to release the stress I accumulate during the week. In short, the stress coming in does not match the stress going out.

What should I do?

I can relate. Seriously. Been in a similar situation during the past year.

My advice is, after or before work each day, search for other jobs that seem more appealing. Put in applications. Work on your resume. Maybe there is a skill that you find interesting. Go back to school (hopefully for something with great job prospects). Take classes in the evenings.

Applying for new jobs and/or school can be very frustrating, I know. I just went through it. It can feel quite overwhelming. But, if you push through it and get a new job that is better, it is totally worth it. It feels like such a relief.

I kept thinking that if I kept at my job, I would get used to the social part that I was struggling with so much. I think that may be true, but maybe it would take a long time. I am much happier moving on.

Also, if you can, try to develop an in-demand skill. And, try not to feel too overwhelmed. You always have options in life, no matter what. Work is not everything. Sometimes we struggle or don't do so well. So what. We each have strengths and weaknesses, no exception. You will find something that works for you, I feel quite sure.

Are you entitled to any sick days? See if you can get a doctor's note to take some time off.

If not, consider whether you:
- can request a transfer to a less stressful position with your employer
- can consult a doctor or therapist to develop ways to manage your stress, ie so you don't have to quit your job.
- have adequate savings to cover 6-12 mos living expenses, in case it takes a long time to find a new job

As to your points, I have attempted them somewhat already, and met with some difficulty. I asked if I could be transferred from the Phone line to the Chat line, which entails me talking to customers via site-based text services. The transfer was denied, because many people are dissatisfied with Phone Sales, and have quit already. I guess the upside is that I have job security? And as to the doctor/therapist route, I have yet to get the proper diagnosis papers. I did visit a psychologist who diagnosed me, but he refused to do the paperwork since it was an informal visit. I also spoke to a freelance autism therapist who had Asperger's Syndrome himself, and he verified, that I was on the spectrum as well. I have the money to afford the fees, but a lack of information as to who to see in my area, as well as a general discomfort of visiting the hospital, and not having transportation to my general practitioner, has made the thought of diagnosis and treatment rather distasteful.

I found meditation and martial arts very helpful as ways to manage work stress. Both of these practices involve extreme concentration and I found that this often took me out of the turmoil of emotions and anxieties that were so hard to bear.
