Why do people view those 'who don't want to work' negatively?

In what light should people who don't want to work, but cannot financially support themselves if they don't, be viewed?

I'd like to make a distinction though - a lot of people have no problem with those who just can't work. The work shy on the other hand are stigmatised in society.

A lot of people have jobs that they hate, and so they see some of the people who aren't working as avoiding something they feel they themselves have to do every day. It's also about money. People don't want to give money to someone who decides, with purpose and no other considerations, that they aren't going to support themselves. Plus, there are way too many assumptions going around about who is and is not able to work, why, or why not. I'm tired of all the judgments and assumptions because they don't motivate very much and may actually hinder those who are being useful. Even people who don't work can be useful in other ways as well, which most people don't even stop to consider.

The English-Language bibles have it written that those who work shall never starve; The Russian-Language bibles have it written that those who want to work shall not perish. The reason explained to me for the Russian difference is that many Russians in former U.S.S.R. wanted to work but could not find any.

Also, understand that in the past, people had to work, otherwise they would literally starve to death.

Life is far easier for us these days than the lives of people from old-country. Old-time sentiments may still remain.

Why wouldn't someone want to work? Even people on disability wish they can work. If you're rich, fine, you don't have to work then. There is a difference between wanting to work and not being able to work so don't say you don't want to work when you aren't able to work or able to get a job.

I agree with what DataB4 said. I'm on disability now, although I still try to contribute to society with my research. I hope to work again someday, in something more disability friendly. Before I was on disability, I had worked one or two jobs since I was 16. My mom stopped supporting me as soon as I got my first job. It's pretty easy for me to do things that I hate in order to get a paycheck. I can't say that I begrudge people who won't do the same, but I also feel no sympathy for them.

I imagine when my son grows up he will not share my attitude, because he is not forced to work and obviously I take care of him. You can't expect people to be driven to work if you create a situation where they don't have to.

In the United States at least, we're taught to consider work as our purpose. It's not that I don't think people working is important, obviously if people didn't work we wouldn't have anything getting done, but people can be unreasonable about it. Like to the point where people who can't work or can't get hired feel like they're bad for not working.

Personally I want to work, but can't seem to get hired. Although in my ideal world I wouldn't have to work, I would just learn my entire life. Take classes, get degrees, and pursue my hobbies. I mostly just want to keep busy and have a purpose.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Being on welfare is not ideal, but having a job that is not accommodating to my needs is not ideal either.

And I am not asking for ridiculous expensive stuff. I asked to have 5 minute breaks like the smokers do because I need moments to breath. I also Told them, where my condition will and won't impact me. I told them I am slower at processing things.

Yet, they still expected me to work at the same pace as everyone else, when it was clear I could not keep up the pace. Not everyday at least.

It didn't help the manager was giving a lot of passive aggressive statements as well to make me "work better"

If I am going to be subjected to a work place of bullying, one that does not accept my pace is the best pace I can do without failing miserably at something, and the work environment doesn't seem to realize how loud it is for me. I'm not going to thrive.

I described employees like flowers. You cannot put a flower in a closet and tell it "now grow". You actually have to set that flower up for success. Give it water and sunlight, and help it grow. But if you suffocate it, it's not going to grow the way you would want it to.

I have lost job after job after job because of this. They don't give me the tools to succeed under the guise, "we cannot show favoritism we have to treat everyone equal"

No you don't. I find it ironic, that we teach school children they are individuals. But because of Equality Act and Equality Morals, we feel the need to treat everyone equal. When you need to treat people on an individual basis of their actual strengths and weaknesses. It's not favoritism. It's just being smart.
