How to broaden my narrow interest and find a future job?
Hello. My interest is in history. I have a facts mind and images come to my head. I learn concepts through examples. I don't really have any other interests. I like politics but it's all negative so it's not worth getting into. I'm currently a college student with 3.7 GPA, part of a franternity, and doing projects with professors and would like to transfer from community college to a good university. I also like learning album sales statistics such as how many albums have sold this year. Temple Grandin talks about turning our fixations into something and broaden it out. I know that it may be hard to get a job in history and archaeology. I would like to do research for a university or teach at a university. I'm just lost. My home situation is up and down and I'm going to be moving out soon. So any advice would be nice. Thank you.
I perhaps may be able to offer some advise. I likewise have an interest in history. I am currently in my senior year in undergraduate education, majoring in history, and intend to go on to graduate school and pursue a career in history.
In regards to jobs in history. There are more history related jobs than most people think; such as teaching, research, public history, museum work, archeology, genealogy, etcetera. Though, the professional historian market can be somewhat competitive depending on what aspect you are going into. Building up your skills, resume, and networking is important.
The skills which can be developed in historical education can also be useful in a number of other fields, such as law, editing, and corporate research.
If you are interested in history and politics, then perhaps you could attempt specializing in political history. If you are interested in statistics, then perhaps you may consider sociology, sociological history, economics, or economic history. Statistics also has a use in a number of corporate jobs.
If you are interested in working for a university, then you will likely need to get a doctorate.
Let me know if you would like any more advice.
