"Current or Recent Govt Clearance"?

I was applying for jobs today and I found one that sounded interesting. One of the requirements though was "Current or Recent Govt Clearance." Does anyone know what this means or how to get it? Does it just mean that I'm a verified citizen or what?

From my experience that usually means that you've passed a clearance level to work in a government field. The depth they go to will vary depending on the level of clearance required for a position. Starting out it's usually like any job, a background check and contacting references.

So am I allowed to apply for it if I don't currently have that clearance?

They mean "security clearance"----and, you get it by having worked at a job that required it. A security clearance is conducted to find-out if you're someone who is a risk----someone who might sell our government's secrets to another country, is definitely a risk; say, someone who has alot of debt, might do anything for money.

I don't think you should apply for it, as you've never had a clearance----you'd just be wasting your time, AND their's.

It's a Catch-22....you can only get one by actually getting hired for a job that requires one. Now having said that, some places will hire the right person and get them a clearance (it's not the government itself that requires you to already have a clearance, but government contractors), but it's difficult...

Companies that get TAXPAYER money should be not be allowed to discriminate in this manner.

Most likely yes, it does not sound like a requirement. I do not know how things work where you live, but they generally ask so they can check if you already is vouched for by someone - or have been, this can simplify/accelerate the hiring process in some cases. If you had one, they can also go back and check if you did something wrong that would be a reason for you not to get it.

Having one or not having one is generally not a problem, you can always get a new clearance. They check your criminal record, your social media contacts, your income, your bank account, your status with collection agencies etc to find out what kind of person you are and what kind of life you are living. The clearance have a best before date and will be repeated as long as you work for the same employer.

If you're a legit individual, you have nothing to worry about. Unlike most other posters in this thread, i've had a security clearance...
