A deceptively simple question since there is so much variation among us autistic people. Even so, I would be interested to hear people's thoughts on the subject.

I would say that IT would be suitable for at least some autistic people.

Anything which does not demand a premium on social interaction and "teamwork."

Something like accounting would be suitable to at least some autistic people.

The ability to "work from home" would be excellent for autistic people.

I have been a data-entry operator for almost 40 years. I've had some bumps along the road---but I have kept my job all these years, and will retire in 4 years.

The one best answer is "It Depends".

Which aspect of your autism is the least troublesome for you?

* Little or no problem interacting with others? Try retail sales, teaching, call-centers, day-care, et cetera.

* Language skills okay? Journalism, writing, clerical, et cetera.

* Hyperlexia? Library, research, legal,

Focus on the strengths that autism gives you, and see where they might work best.

Something that is one of your special interests. This may also be a test for autism in that a normal person will often tire of an activity, even one they normally find enjoyable, if they have to do it every day, while someone on the spectrum can do the same thing year after year. :D
