I was offered a sales job, but should I take it?

So what happened was, I was applying for jobs on the website indeed, which advertises jobs. Indeed was looking for people experienced in videography, and sound for film productions, and I applied to a job on their, saying I was more experienced in sound recording and uploaded my resume of my past production works.

Indeed emailed me later, and asked if they could keep my resume on file, so I said sure.

About a week later now, I didn't hear back from that position. However, another company entirely said they read my resume on indeed and said they felt I would be a great candidate for their position of a sales representative.

I find this really strange, cause I don't see what a resume of mostly film productions and sound recording, plus the odd manual labor jobs in between, has anything to do with sales.

Should I take them up on this offer, and say that I am interested, since I am looking for a job, and maybe it sounds like a good opportunity, landing in my lap... or does this sound really strange, or what do you think?

What more do you know about this sales job?
Is it related to your field of expertise?
Is it phone sales or face to face?
Do you like talking on the phone or talking with people face to face?
Does it involve travel? Do you like travel?
Are you motivated by selling things? That is, does selling something thrill you and are you then desirous to sell more?

Sales jobs in general due to the challenges of persuading people to part with their money and the high rate of rejection which results can result in a very high turnover. As such, it's not surprising that a company reached out to you even though you were not looking for a sales job.

That said, there are most definitely people that love sales jobs and excel at them. Generally, but not always, in my experience with 18 years in a sales related industry, people who excel in sales are extroverts. Someone who is considered a "people person".

I agree that this employer is probably recruiting aggressively, knowing that many new hires will not work out.

If you like their product or service they are selling, and find out it is a decent company to work for, you could try the work and see if you like it. It's maybe not something you want to do for 30 years, but you could learn some things that will help you pitch your film ideas successfully.

If it will suck the soul out of you and drain your vitality, maybe you should pass.

When they said you were a good fit they were "qualifying" you for the role. There wasn't a link to your skills it just sounds good. They sound like they are a bit desperate to fill the roles.

In my experience sales jobs are easy to get and hard to keep.

Should you go for it? If you can try it out and not feel like a failure if its not for you then go for it and make a bit of cash.

Well my skills in sound recording and filmmaking were listed on the resume, but I don't see what those have to do with being a sales rep at all.

I mean your qualified but in a different area than sales

Sales jobs have a high turnover. Esoteric skills and/or spotty employment are signs that the candidate may be desperate for any kind of employment.

It may be that someone needing a lot of salespeople looked at your resume and figured that you might be desperate enough to take any offer that comes your way. A lot of people get hooked into pyramid schemes and telemarketing this way.

Be careful.

I've had people contact me on indeed for jobs that in no way I would be good at. You need to research the company too. Also many sales jobs you work on commission which means you don't get paid much or anything unless you make sales and they might even have a quota on how many sales you have to make to keep the job.

Look I don't know about everyone else, but there is not a perfect answer as to what job you should or should not have.
