Hello. It's been quite a while since I last posted on Wrong Planet but I thought I may update everyone on what has happened since I last posted. My last post was about my anxiety of getting fired. I had a meltdown the day before my mums surgery. I told my colleague in tears that I was worried I was going to get fired. She reassured me that it wasn't going to happen and if it did she would stick up for me. But since then my timekeeping has not improved and I keep failing to meet high standards of cleanliness. We have a new Head Housekeeper who fortunately is English which is better as I can communicate easier. However, she sends me back a lot to correct my mistakes. I understand she is trying to make all sorts of improvements but she is making me feel like I can't do my job properly. Yesterday, I suffered a lecture from her about my time leaving me speechless. I struggle to keep up the pace because of my autism but I just told her about some unexpected things in some of the bedrooms. She accused me of not listening when we had a staff meeting the other day but really it wasn't deliberately not listening I find it hard to understand what people want me to do. I was left feeling very low and depressed last might. I couldn't stop crying because the only criticism I receive is negative.

So I am now considering telling the truth to my employer. But I am scared about how they will react when I disclose my autism. What if they start treating me badly, discriminating against me or even sack me? I don't want to get sacked for having Asperger's. I want my employer to have a better understanding of my difficulties and what they can do to make my work life better for me. I want to be treated like everyone else not differently. And with respect to. Do you think disclosing my Asperger's is the right thing to do? Let me know please.

I don't know the ins-and-outs of your employment, or relationship with your superiors. However, I do know that if you had disclosed it in the interviewing process, then they can't fire you for symptoms.

My boyfriend has PTSD, and discloses it in the job interviews. That way, if something triggers him, they knew it when they hired him so that they legally can't fire him. We are in NY though. Maybe that's different for you where you reside.

Good luck. I hope you're doing better. Performance anxiety coupled with "I will get fired anxiety" is one bad time. I smpathise. I went through that about a month ago. Luckily, I found a company with a high turn-over rate. They will fire NO ONE. It's a good place for me to enhance my skills until I can work somewhere better.

No matter what happens, it's not the end of the world. Unless it is. (Then you won't have to worry about employment.)

Until then, keep breathing.

Disclosing that you have autism is unlikely to make them understand what you need. All that will do is suggest you have a disability. In order to make them understand what you need you will have to explain what you need in terms of accommodations. Some of us find it better to just ask for the accommodations that we need, and not bother with labels.
