So I took a job in a financial service call center as the pay was could and they promised certs once we converted. Here we are a year later and outside myself and one other person everyone else has been hired on or has taken the cert and failed and was fired. They keep promising me that I will be converted from being a contingent worker, and yet here it is almost 4 months later and they are waiting on a background check. I was upfront about a marijuana charge, but that should not be an issue in theory. On top of this this background check is being done by home office so I can send in docs to them but as far as contact people they are just able to see what is going on, not actually make the decision on it and my boss is not able to either. For how much I would be making this is just not worth it. I do have an interview to be an entry level business analyst with a bank, so hoping that goes through, else I feel like in order to find a job I like I need to go back to school. Oh and yeah some people joke about how I will be a temp forever and all the decent people have left or were fired. I just feel like they are bullshitting me on the background check until the end of the busy time and then will fire me. I am just so stressed as I worked to get on permanently for a year so I could achieve goals like buy a duplex to live in and rent, but with that out of reach the only reason I have not quit is I can't find something more intellectual stimulating. HELLPPP! How can a f*****g background check take 4 f*****g months?

It probably depends on the type of work you are doing. If the job requires a security clearance, it can take a year. If you don't like the job or feel you are not being treated fairly, then find another job. From my perspective working in a financial service call center would probably have a minimal background check unless you manage large amounts of money.
But and this is a big but - it is important to have another job lined up before you quit your current job.

I mean there is some regulatory morass, but I am not dealing with the government. Further everyone else was done usually within a month. I just feel screwed over. As I said I had an interview for a non-phone position so wish me luck! Just the waiting is killing me and then the boringness of it all without proper incentive (no raise in pay or anything) is killing me as I have no reason to try and improve. Further they are encouraging us to not call back to people we were working on helping and just focus on the new calls. It all seems to be about the dollar versus sound business practices. I get that they need to make money, but if you piss customers off that will hurt business too.

I wish you luck on your non-phone position.

Well it fell through. Oh well. Guess interviews are not actual interviews, but subject to change.

I've had background checks that took just a couple weeks but the more states you have lived in, or the more aliases you've used the longer it takes.
And it's true for security clearances, that can take a very long time depending on level and backlogs.
I'm sorry your interview didn't happen.
It might be worth sending your resume outside your current company to see what you might find. You might get a good offer or one that at least has more potential for permanent status. If you do get an offer from some other company at the same rate of pay as you are earning now it could be useful to ask your current company if they are going to move forward or else your are going to leave.

In my state background checks sometimes go quickly and others get held up for months. No rhyme or reason to it.

I hope you can find a job that suits you better.

I have sent it to external companies, but nothing seems quite what I want. I am half tempted to change careers in a bit honestly. On a positive note they did give me time to study for the certification I need. Will see how it goes but the winter job market is meh.

That sounds very positive that they value you enough to give you time to study!
Whatever direction you decide to go, you have a nice, solid bit of experience to improve your future prospects.
Best of luck on the exam!

Well good news finally got hired on. I just need to finish two licenses then I can kick back for a bit. I might try and eventually find something more stimulating but for now the pay is good and I can work on some goals I have been putting off.

I could never work at a call center, even for a month. I would probably destroy the phone if I had a frusterating interaction so yeah not the job for me.

My only downside is I feel like my life has gone on autopilot. Plan on getting certificates to get into something more stimulating.
