The same clinictian that recently diagnosed me with ASD also said there was no reason why I'm not working. I'm a 35 min drive to the nearest zoo now and that is what he suggested. The nature center is even closer but only has volunteers. But I looked at the zoos website and they are hiring but they need someone that can lift 50lbs!! ! Plus I need transportation!! ! Hmm...

What kind of position is it, like what would you be doing?

It seems like a lot of jobs say you have to be able to lift 50lbs, but seems when actually on a job site if you struggle with that co-workers can help. Unless of course the job description is basically hauling heavy things around for your shift, like if you were applying to be a mover or something.

I'd have a hard time with 50lbs to, that's pretty much half my bodyweight and I am not at all muscular.

I am about to be diagnosed, and I'm not even going to bother asking the evaluator about employment/disability benefits. She has seen me only twice, albeit for hours at a time. It is very difficult to get people to understand how disabling invisible, neurodevelopmental conditions like autism are unless you are mute and still in diapers.

There are almost no jobs I can handle and my strategy is to focus on my most disabling symptoms (insomnia and noise sensitivity) rather than just showing someone the ASD diagnosis and expecting them to see how it's disabling. Maybe that would work for you too...unless you think that you can work.

I wouldn't be able to handle a 35-minute commute twice a day. NTs don't think about secondary aspects of getting/holding a job, such as noise/smell/sights of commutes, the effort required to shower/get dressed in a limited amount of time, and the executive function necessary to be at the same place every day at roughly the same time. You have to explain it all yourself, and even then they may not get it if they aren't familiar with ASD, ADHD, etc.

Work somewhere else

Not everyone works at their ideal job

Not everyone is good at their job

Not everyone likes their boss or co-worker

Uber

Lyft

Bike

Motorcycle

Move closer to work

Is there a post office in your area? You could see if they are hiring / accepting resumes. I have heard that working for a post office is pretty aspie-friendly.

The main issue is animals/birds/plants is mostly what I know.... What the evaluator was saying was if I can type (which I can) I should have a job. But bird jobs are normally hands-on, etc...

I come off to people as non-neurotypical I found out by strangers asking me if I'm Autistic, my relatives, etc...

But one thing is when I'm stressed I have meltdowns, and jobs cause stress. But when I'm bored I get depressed, severely depressed, as if my different challenges (autism and bipolar) come out in different situations.

I'm determined to lose weight too. I am starting a diet to see if I do. But I'm having a hard time being active because my back hurts when I am.

It's a lot easier to tell someone they should be holding down a job, than for a person to actually get one.

I'm thinking about a different approach...

Since I'm getting a stimulus check, I can use part of it to take the GRE test (a little over 200 US dollars) to see how well I do and maybe I can get a higher degree. Is 37 too old to go back to college?

When I took the GRE years ago I didn't study. I was in the 70th percentile!! ! In the Verbal section but I bombed my math and was only in the 30th percentile.

If I actually study I might have a good chance, I almost got into grad school before on those previous grades.

Great idea!

I just googled and persons with disabilities can get a discounted price on their GRE. Please make sure you also apply for all available accommodations, to help you through the test.

The hard part would be the letters of recommendation for grad school since it was so very long ago I worked for the university. My supervisor for my last job who is now a professor said my job history was too long ago, another supervisor said I need to find another internship I can physically do.
