Hello,

I am a teaching assistant, at an elementary school, on the autism spectrum. I have been working the job for four years and I am loving it and am thinking about being a teacher (despite the hardships of being a teacher in this present day). I have been reading posts about teachers and teaching assistants on the autism spectrum, but they were from 5-10 years ago. So therefore, I am wondering if there are still any of you guys who are teachers or teaching assistants who work with elementary/primary aged children. I would be happy to learn from you all about your experiences in order for me to get some insight.

I look forward to learning from you all and getting to know you all.

Welcome to Wrong Planet.

I am not a teacher now, but I have been a teacher in the past (college level.) I think what I had to offer was a way of breaking down difficult subjects into little parts so students could understand. Also I can be calm and understanding.

blazingstar,

Thank you for sharing! I try to be calm and understanding as well. A lot of my colleagues like how I am patient.

Hi:

I have been an elementary school teacher for 19 years and love it. Sure there are lots of challenges too, some of them are Aspie related. Would be happy to answer any questions you have or discuss anything.

About 10 years ago I got my alternative certification to be a teacher but never found a teaching job. I think its probably for the best because I don't think I have the temperament for the job. My wife teaches third grade so I'm pretty well aware of the day to day challenges of teaching. At this point my belief it that it is a calling. If you are called to be a teacher you will be a great one.
