Asperger Syndrome ASD's get less opportunity in employment
I was thinking the other day with regards to having Asperger Syndrome ASD, or having ASD without an intellectual disability.
I think that having ASD while being bright and conscious of whats going on around you may actually be worse than having ASD with an intellectual disability.
For example. In the area that i live, people with ASD and an intellectual disability often live in sheltered housing,
with some nice carers who do things for them, including normal daily living things, but also give them opportunities to socialize etc.
Quiet a few of those with an intellectual disability now are employed in one of the charitable facilities that is designed to give people with ASD and an intellectual disability meaningful and therapeutic employment.
Such individuals also often have a fairly big social circle, as they live and work with people on the same wave length.
The employment roles are also often on their own level in terms of being intellectually stimulating and challenging.
The problem with people with ASD and who have a higher than normal IQ, is that we can't be as easily placed in employment, as what is intellectually stimulating and challenging to someone with ASD and an intellectual disability, would drive us bonkers after a day through boredom due to not being intellectually stimulating / challenging enough for us.
So, people who have ASD and who are not intellectually disabled end up not getting work that is suitable for them,
which means that we either get excluded or we get underemployed.
As the jobs that we would like to have that would be stimulating for us, we inevitably get ignored for as well, as
although we are intelligent enough, many of us can not cope with the amount of stress that normal people are expected to take in a normal days work, we also have additional barriers to getting employed because of other well known ASD traits that affect our communication and perception.
Despite this fact, no one has bothered to consider how to help people with ASD who are bright,
because we are bright...
The NTs think that having an above IQ means that we aren't disabled.
However, as any one who knows what they are talking about with regards to ASD can tell you.
The disability that is ASD no longer has anything to do with IQ.
All people with the ASD label are disabled.
So why are a percentage of brainy ASD sufferers considered less in need for help.
I think their is a perceptual issue here. any thoughts?
