Worried about finding a job

Hi, I am 31 years old and my employment history has been really bad. The jobs I have had include retail (working at Kinkos), a one-on-one math tutor, a Math teacher (got fired), and phone sales (quit because I was about to get fired). I do have an undergraduate degree in Advertising, I was going to do engineering but my parents told me I wasnt smart enough to do it, so I never did. Right now, my life is kind of in bad shape. I live with my mom in a really small house, Im broke and I havent worked in about 3 years. I think the only job I could get is retail, but that is a job that I least want. I have an offer to go back to the University I dropped out at about a 4 weeks ago, but not until this next september. Do people have aspergers usually succeed in making their own businesses, or is it too stressful? I am worried that I am going to stay broke, bored, single forever.

I am in a very similar situation to yourself capt, and I have got a awful work history which is almost non existent and for the experiences I have had with work I can say they were truly unbearable. If I were you I would give starting up a business a go and from what I can tell its not about what label you have got its more about what you can provide as an individual. You see people with aspergers still are individuals and we all have different skills and things, I am a creative type while others would prefer to do programing etc. There will be things that you will find more difficult though.

My problems were not being able use general buzz words like professional as I feel they lack a descriptive truth to them. I also noticed that people would go into business without any real skills and lie and deceive each other about how great they were when in fact they were almost useless. Another thing that scares me about starting up a graphic design business is that I am awful at marketing myself in any real normal way and tend to be too original and imaginative meaning I it goes rite above peoples heads. I always think of the negative things I guess but I think that is a good thing in art as its always best to challenge yourself.

Anyway I think if you have a degree in Advertising then your on your way, I would if I was you do a course or two on business and do some research into the business you are wanting to set up. i don't know where u are from but I am sure there should be some schemes about that give capital to people wanting to start up a business. Well its my new years resolutions to go about setting up a business again and now I don't live with my kids I can take more financial risks in pursuit of starting up. Oh and please to listen to anyone who say's you couldn't set up a business because I think most use that to try and put you off. Of course setting a business will have its stress and more so if you find it difficult to communicate with people but you have got to give it ago.

If you return to the university...why not go to the Counseling/Academic Office and ask for some career assessment tests to see
where exactly your interests lie? Most universities offer such services...and will save you alot of money in the long run.
Too many people receive college degrees after four years and then, ended up hating the job they spent all those years preparing for in those four years of college.

Also, have you considered learning a trade instead of attending a university? There are many more jobs in the field of carpentry,
Electrician, Plumbing, Auto Mechanics, Welding, etc...and you can become your own boss if you want to. Even a two year degree in a field like X-ray Technology has more job openings than many four year university degrees. People always need x-rays, Cat Scans and MRIs.

Besides, Trade jobs stay in the USA unlike jobs, like Information Technology and too many other jobs that are being "outsourced" overseas to places like India.

I love having my own business. It's difficult, but I love it.

If you're good at math, and at tutoring, then put an ad in a paper "Math Tutor Available" or something like that. Good luck!

Only difference between us is I never gave up or listened to even well meaning people who said oh Wolf dear heart you can't ever hope to get that job. First step of being an empowered autistic is taking full control over your self and your future. Next take fullest advantage of all the opportunities college has to offer. Third pick something you are a natural fit for doing. Choose a major in a subject that is so much fun to you that the work assignments are like play time or at least fun time.

Finding a job is actually the last part of the process. First thing is you want to develop a skill so awesome to potential employers that they look right past the disabilities to focus more exclusively on your abilities. Also see your state Vocational rehab office and demand the help your need and deserve.

You guys talk about bad work history. No job I held before now lasted longer than six months. I spent most of my life volunteering at hospitals trying to learn how to work among typical people without getting mad. I installed small computer networks for friends and doctors. I have successfully held my current job for what is beginning its eighth year. In my current job I just recently applied for and got a promotion. I was not successful in the job world till I reached age 41. Before my success at age 41 I was a patient escort at a state hospital. I had a paid job as an accounts payable clerk at a hospital. I had a job processing bulk mail for a charity. I had a job at a train station carry out shoppe and I had a few day laborer jobs.

I share all this with you because, I made it from a kid everyone said would be nothing more than a ret*d in a state mental hospital to being an IT specialist. I have gone from 41 years as a basket case st home or on disability and section 8 housing to being a home owner living on my own and paying my own way. To hear most people describe my chances growing up and now youo would not think I could do anything. Some people look at my crossed eyes today and think I am dumb as a box of rocks. People look at the odd things that make us autistic like the blank looks and cohort disabilities and some see ret*ds. Don't let yourself be suckered in by people who do not have your strength to successfully manage your autism. Your strength is there within you please find it and use it to the best for yourself and others. When you are successful pass on the hope to the next generation of autitics please thats all I ask.
