An Internship
Hi! I have a question for all of you: If you are in college/ have attended college, did you participate in an internship? What were all of your experiences with internships?
Was it hard like a job would be? Did anyone find it to be easier/more relaxed or more like a class in school?
We all know jobs can often be hard for ppl w/ AS, but I got to thinking, what about internships? They're jobs, but then, they can also be college credit. So, jobs=hell on the one hand, and school=pretty easy on the other. I would think an internship would be hard (social, politics, and executive-function-wise) just like a job. But I wasn't sure.
Just to give some background, and sorry this is so long, but anyway...I went to college, but somehow never was required to have an internship, and since it wasn't required and I was sort-of subconciously dreading any type of job even then (for reasons you all can somewhat sympathize with, I'm sure, after reading these posts), I never did one. I know I should have. Even though it would have been hard.
I always realized it would be a good way to get experience, but the question is whether or not it would have been any less painless than a regular job, that's what I wanted to find out from you
I've had a few internships. If you don't need to make money, then internships are AWESOME. At least in my experience. You get a lot more choice in the things you do, and everyone is very appreciative of you being there. When you're not getting paid, people usually compensate by being really nice to you.
I suppose it depends on the position and how well one functions socially. In my case I felt like I was expected to jump right in and be completely prepared for the position like an assistant employee. But I believe they could be a good experience if you find the right match for you.
I know to women went to the same placement and I believe an arrangement like that would have helped me alot. If I knew what I know now I would definetly research and be sure my advisor knew my abilities and limitations.
