Switching Gears to become a Librarian
Hello. I decided to switch my career. I started off in the entertainment industry for two years but did a horrible job in managing details and managing relationships. It was horrible... and wanted to get out but my parents told me not to quit without a job because of the horrible economy. I ended up just picking a thing to go to grad school in, and chose counseling, but as I've gotten here, I wanted to do more research and not even work with people. I learned that my disability in reading people and understanding people inhibit me in being a good therapist. So I'm thinking of becoming an academic librarian. It's funny... like engineering firms that have a lot of AS people, universities, with their controlled environment is a haven for Aspies. I LOVE academia and watn to stay in academia. So I'm probably going to get a Master's here at USD in History, and then go on to get an MLIS... I hope this works out well... I'm so nervous, and just need to find something I'm good at. I hate the corporate world and want to let it go and never go back... especially "Fricken Hollywood!"
I have a friend that's studying to be a librarian, she really likes it. I don't know much about the job-- what exactly do you do? Anyway, I used to work in the music business, and it was hard because it can be really exploitative. I'm really sensitive about people taking advantage of me or treating me unfairly. Anyway, best of luck! Glad you found something you enjoy.
Depends where your library is. A working knowledge of the dewey decimal system might help. Martial arts skills as well, perhaps.
My mother works as a librarian, and has more dealings with unsociable behaviour, and greater contact with the police, and more active threats to her person than I do, and I work in a city pub frequented by football hooligans and all manner of nutcase.

I work in a library...but only as a library technician. One day I'll be a librarian. If you want to be a ibrarian, I'd say go for a special library eg in a law firm or something. Then people only come to you when they want you to find a book for them. The thing I don't like about the library I work in is that there are lots of schoolkids. And teachers. And people in general.
