[OPINION=Prognostication]
The economy will not expand so much as commercial interests contract to meet decreased demand. Once the balance is achieved, there will be a slow, cautious recovery period as wages and manufacturing capacity expand together. The key is to limit credit just enough to inspire consumers to purchase goods and services as needed - rather than because those goods and services are available - and to not restrict credit so much as to make education, housing, education, medical care, and transportation out of reach of all but the most wealthy among us.
Whatever happens will require patience, frugality, and a collective focus on issues that directly affect the economy (food and medical costs, wages, labor, ethics, armed conflict, crime, employment, production, et cetera) instead of peripheral issues (celebrity gossip, religion, politics, sports, fashion, et cetera).
