Thanks to California's inability to balance the state budget, my job has been eliminated effective December 19th.
I just got my notice today. They have already cut amost 20% state and county jobs across the board. My boss thinks they'll cut another 20% by the end of this week.
Jobless right before Christmas for f kcs' sake!

Pretty soon, the only jobs available will be for bill collectors. Probably not a good choice for an Aspie.

And then, when pople stop paying, because they can't pay, the collection industry will collapse.
People need quilts. Learn how to make quilts. Oh...you know already?
Looks like you're ahead of the game.

I hear they're hiring in Massachussets.

Sorry if that seems rude, Fnord, but I don't think we're hiring out here, either. Thank God I'm on disability now - I was jobhunting from 2004 to 2007 while getting by on temp jobs until I got too sick to work anymore.

But then, maybe NocturnalQuilter has job skills that are more 'in demand' than mine were.

No worries ... some of my contacts around the Harrisburg / Hershey area said they had some leads around Boston, but they weren't very specific about them.

We just lost a dispatcher in one of our call centers to a heart attack ten days ago, and already we're inundated with résumés and phone calls from people who are desperate for any kind of work. Too bad most of the applicants have police records, bad credit, or lack the basic language skills needed for the job.

It will happen - but I think the "experts" are predicting the bottom to hit near the end of 2009 or start of 2010.

[OPINION=Prognostication]

The economy will not expand so much as commercial interests contract to meet decreased demand. Once the balance is achieved, there will be a slow, cautious recovery period as wages and manufacturing capacity expand together. The key is to limit credit just enough to inspire consumers to purchase goods and services as needed - rather than because those goods and services are available - and to not restrict credit so much as to make education, housing, education, medical care, and transportation out of reach of all but the most wealthy among us.

Whatever happens will require patience, frugality, and a collective focus on issues that directly affect the economy (food and medical costs, wages, labor, ethics, armed conflict, crime, employment, production, et cetera) instead of peripheral issues (celebrity gossip, religion, politics, sports, fashion, et cetera).

[/OPINION]

Sorry to hear about your redundancy. and so close to Christmas as well. I did hear of a place that wanted to make people redundant, but held off until the New Year.

I'm in Sacramento trying to find work, have been since I got my work permit in April. Lots of interviews, no jobs. Had an interview for a job I really, really wanted at a local uni, only heard yesterday,3 weeks after the interview, that I hadn't got it. Back to the drawing board! I feel a bit bitter that I left a job I liked (and was very secure) in England to come out here, I suppose it was just bad luck and timing!

I feel your pain because the jobs I'm going for are in higher education admin, all of them dependent on state funding. It's amazing just how bad it has become, with the number of job ads for public sector jobs just plummeting like a stone. My wife works for the county, she's pretty confident her job is safe, but it would be an utter disaster if she were made redundant.

People advise you to go for casual work, but being an aspie (or near as dammit) I seem to find it impossible to go for casual jobs. You see these pieces on the news about job fairs or casino hiring days being inundated with people. I couldn't imagine myself working as a nobody in a hotel or casino (not least because I don't drive). I'd be much happier in an office, doing something of use to society. Seriously, though, do you think it has something to do with the fact that most of these jobs involve customers service, constant contact with the public, etc, and that they expect you to hit the ground running, require little or no training?
