Ideal Volunteer Job for an Aspie
here's the places I've volunteered at and my experiences with them. But I think it really depends on the type of person you'll be working with and the environment.
LIBRARY:
PROS:
- Books are special interest.
- It's quiet.
- Lots of organizing things, relatively easy work but helps out a lot.
CONS:
- Bad staff who grew impatient giving me directions/instructions over and over, assumed I wasn't listening to them.
- Bad staff who didn't like my experience, didn't like how I never smiled, didn't like that I never looked at them-- assumed I was unfriendly and therefore never let me work there and soon stopped letting me volunteer.
- Wouldn't set a schedule for me, so I was labeled as "undependable" because I grew nervous and wouldn't go if I didn't have a good schedule.

APARTMENT BUILDINGS FOR ELDERLY/DISABLED:
PROS:
- Amazing landlady who was very understanding. Didn't allow me to do work I was uncomfortable with. Took me out for food and let me work at my own pace. Carefully went through instructions with me and showed me where to go because I get lost easily.
CONS:
- The people living there were very...touchy... and I couldn't handle them touching me.
- Constantly having to introduce myself and do small talk with everyone that was around.
Really-- it depends on who you're working with and the kind of environment you're being in. Preferably doing something that interests you. Volunteering made me feel really great so I hope you find a place you like =]
I think it depends on the Aspie. I like to talk about water related topics, so I found my ideal volunteer job is working with the local watershed education organizations teaching kids about watersheds. What do you like to do? I am sure there are many volunteer opportunities that can be designed around your strengths.
