That is scary. I hope it doesn't cause him too much discomfort (or you!). My oldest had it as a young infant prior to being fully vaccinated (she had traditional vaccine schedule) and it was terrifying. It sure leaves you feeling helpless. I hope your tiny person is over it soon!!

It is very scary! The cough is very scary sounding!! !!

They gave my daughter a nebulizer to help her breathe in the emergency room. My son has asthma when he was much younger (everytime he got a cold it turned into asthma). He's since grown out of it, thankfully, but watching him cough until he'd vomit was horrible. :( It is heart wrenching watching them struggle to breathe. Thank goodness you caught it early! Here's hoping it passes quickly. I'm sure they told you steamy showers, etc., and you're doing all you can. Keep us posted!

That must be so awful. I hope it will resolve quickly.

I generally believe in the efficacy of vaccinations, but have always found it ironic that I've never known a child with chicken pox who hadn't been vaccinated for it.

I had an interesting conversation with my son's doctor regarding vaccines.

I told him I wanted to delay his vaccines. I explained that I am not anti-vaccine, gave him my reasons for requesting the delays, and explained that I am fully aware there is no scientific evidence that proves either side, along with a ton of misinformation out there.

He started off with stating there is no evidence suggesting that anything in vaccines cause autism. I agreed. He said so many other things in our world have changed or increased just as quickly as vaccines, I agreed. He gave some examples of misinformation and studies that suggested vaccines cause autism and how they were proved to be inaccurate.

But then he also stated it is very hard to argue with a mother that believes they saw it first hand - one day their child had a vaccine, the next day they had autism.

He said besides the information he gave me, his problem with a delayed schedule is that they get audited and rated by the state. One of the criteria is if they gave the vaccines on time to the children on their records. This affects the amount of money the state gets from the feds.

He said we can consider using the later recommended age range for future vaccines.

He also pointed out, as someone here on the thread did, that in some cases, such as polio, the disease is much worse than autism, and that should be taken into consideration.

Over all I was happy with how the conversation went.

Well, this is quite ironic....

My 1.5 yr old has had 3 doses of DTap. Guess what? He has pertussis (whooping cough)...I caught it early, so he will be OK. It is kind of scary though - he woke up having trouble breathing and suddenly had the stereotypical whooping cough. Runny nose one day, whooping cough the next day.

Oh, wow! I am so glad you caught it! Almost makes all this discussion seem almost uncanny, doesn't it?

I am also pleased to hear that you had a good conversation with your doctor.

Im so glad I logged on to find this thread today. Im in the same boat essentially, I have a 17 month old DD who is supposed to get her MMR shot at her next appt and Im very hesitant for her to get it despite knowing all the research out there. I have avoided scheduling the appointment for that reason. Im thinking about doing what DW_a_mom suggested and breaking out her shots individually. Hopefully they will do that. Im sorry to hear your LO has whooping cough, I hope he gets better quickly!

I didn't read all the way through the thread so not sure if this was mentioned. Although the preschool tells you that vaccinations are required, there are ways around it. My daughter has not been vaccinated and she has attended preschool, public school, and private school without any problem. If you PM me and tell me what state you are in, I can look up the laws in your state and let you know how to get your child in preschool without having vaccinations. This way you can wait if you still want to.

In Oregon, you just look at the bottom of the immunization form for the exemption box. Check religious preference, sign the paper and its done. In Nebraska you need to ask for the exemption form and fill it out. There is no need in any state to divulge your religion.

I'm kind of in the middle on this issue, I believe that vaccines can be a trigger, but I also believe it could be pesticides and hormones and genetic modification in foods that can be a trigger.

I'm a strong believer in the genetic component though, I think that's the main thing in it all. Reason? My entire family. Strange people generations back (some mentally ill or "mentally ill"), many, many undiagnosed probable or possible aspies (me included) and many other traits and spectrum-ish type things all over our family, we're all a bit eccentric. My husband, though I don't know much about his extended family or even how he was as a child, from what I do know of him as an adult and what he's told me about his childhood, he is also very spectrum-ish. My daughter was diagnosed with Aspergers and in hind sight, there were signs of it right from the beginning and on through until we became concerned. My son shows some spectrum-ish things (he's 3) but so far no major concerns, he might just be another in a long line of brilliant, creative, unusual, socially awkward, spectrum-ish people.

My son was developing fine until his immunizations (19 month) and ran 103.5 fever and that's all I'm saying. Forever changed.

Has he been investigated for a mitochondrial condition?

Also, what about the genetic history? Are other autism related conditions in the family?
