Hi there -
I am a licensed psychotherapist and former actor - and I am thinking of forming an acting class specifically for Asperger teens in L.A. I am thinking for the summer, around 8 weeks, for an hour long class. Acting and improv are wonderful ways to enhance social skills and human connection - plus it's fun! Would anyone out there be interested? - Leda

if you lived near me, I would love it. For my son, though, you would have to have no performance.

I totally understand about no performance - not my goal. In fact, I think the actors would have to decide whether they wanted to ever present anything at all. I am looking at a space off Hollywood Blvd., near Vermont. It is a community space (not a 'real' theatre) and I am thinking for July through August, 8 sessions. - Leda

We're no where near you, but I like the idea. My son loves being on stage and acting; I've noticed that acting works out well for a lot of kids with ASD, but I suspect there are many that would find actually trying out for a regular production to be a little out-putting, so what you are offering could be a nice little foot-in-the-water. Main thing I'm worried about is if you'll have enough concentration of need and location, but that you won't know if you don't put it out there.

I think it is a very good idea. My son is entering middle school next year. His middle school only offers drama as part of an elective rotation in 6th grade so he isn't taking it, but he has said as soon as he can take it as a full elective, he wants to. I know many aspies would have no interest in performing, but you might find a few who are interested. I know my son would love it. He has no fear of public speaking and would love to have people focused on what he was saying and doing.

I think it is a good idea, but I do not live in that area. It reminds me of when Sheldon took acting lessons from Penny in The Big Bang Theorem.
