Nice to see Blonadeambition back :)

In news from my kneck of the woods, we've settled on Proloquo2go as the AAC software for my son. I preferred TapToTalk for some aspects as it is cross platform I.e. Android and Apple (and others) and we have both, plus it syncs centrally from the web (i.e. all clients keep in sync from a master database), however Proloquo2go has more subtle options that can help certain things e.g. Icon sizing, variable delays on keypress to prevent unintentional key presses etc, and you edit it on the device rather than through a browser.
Expensive at $250 but far cheaper than the alternatives of only a few years back.

So we have bought an ipod touch with the intention of transitioning my son from PECS to AAC. The iPad is too big to be practical as a permanent AAC. We have only 5 choices on P2G at the moment, all tempting things like chocolate chippie biscuits, or playing outside. The aide at school wears it on a fob, and we are going to start wearing it at home as an interim to him wearing it which is the long term ultimate plan.

I downloaded SonoFlex Lite a while back before my son was talking much, it's the free version of the same sort of program so I could try it out to see if it was useful for us. I'm sure it was nowhere near as fancy but for being free it still had a ton of options. I programed a lot of smart-alecky things into to it so that when for example he pushed the diaper option it would say: "I need a diaper, please. (pause) You are going to need a lot of wipes and a gas mask for this one." (The look on my partner's face was priceless when he heard these things.) He never used it for practical purposes but he did play with it and I think he got some educational value out of it.

I think that this is a really good idea. Your son is also younger, so you can explain that he doesn't know how to do certain things yet because he is younger. (I often give this explanation to my older son to explain my younger son's behaviors. Neither is really up to understanding how autism affects each other's behavior, except in a very superficial way.)

You can also try giving the autism explanation. However, it could backfire. A lot of parents don't want their kids playing with a child who is autistic, perhaps fearing that their own child would be labeled as "different." They also don't want to bother setting up a play date with a child who is not on their own child's level. Around here, most parents spend a lot of time at work. The kids already socialize at daycare or Boy Scouts, so these busy parents don't see the need to arrange additional play dates unless the kids are a really good match.

Well the kid's parents are actually a couple of friends from college and I will be moving fairly close to them soon. The kid himself was in EI for language delay but he doesn't have any diagnosis I know of.

I haven't mentioned my son's diagnosis to my friends yet, mainly because it's not something I like to advertise. Might have to eventually anyway since the kids will be going to the same school and my son is going to be in the special needs class.

Mainly I am worried my friend's son will come over and be disappointed because my son will not interact with him at all...

Hey all my son has learnt to use a Mouse, I'm way impressed!
The therapist taught him, by putting her hand over his and guiding him to click on things, and he's got it and can do it independantly now.

Glad to hear it! I'm sure he'll be deleting files from off your desktop and finding annoying videos on YouTube in no time. :D

Great! My 2-year-old can do it but not the ASD 4-year-old. We are trying to teach him, though.

I'm glad... many things can be taught to our children. I've been away for a while, so... hello everybody!

When James goes to school a little notebook goes in his bag and the teachers write things about what happened in the day and how he was. There was an entry today that left my wife and me gobsmacked. So James had a wee fall and bruised his leg, but basically after that he went and got a teacher, pulled up his trouser leg and pointed to where it hurt :o :o :D

(Hi Claudia!)

That's great! My son does not do that.

I had the opposite reaction to an entry in the little notebook today...apparently on the bus on the way to school another kid bit my son. They said that the kid who bit will have to sit alone in the future...I hope they enforce this. (Kids are all seated and buckled in by parents/teachers.)

That's wonderful. Ethan has been doing this recently with some bumps too, and he won't stop pointing to his boo-boo until it gets a kiss. :D He still doesn't answer "what happened?" (at least not in a way that makes sense) but sometimes by asking yes-no questions I can get a rough idea.

This is one of my fears only I'm afraid no one is going to see it happen therefore the school/bus driver will take the stance that it didn't happen on their watch. Happens all the time. My son has never bit anybody, I can imagine him picking up that sort of behavior from other kids too.

The summer session bus drivers are awful...and there's a different driver nearly every day. One brought a baby, another was super late...I think the only way to prevent something like this would be to have a bus monitor, and I don't think the school district is willing to pay for this.

Just as well, it's only for a couple of more weeks till we move into our own home in a different school district.

Its really nice to have a notebook thought isn't it? I always look forward to reading my sons one and find out a little of what happened during his day.

Great progress last night, my son was talking to his Dad and he said, "I'm an iphone". And his Dad said, "no ... you're a Ethan", so he repeated it "I'm an Ethan" ... and Dad said "I'm Daddy" and instead of doing echolalia he said "I'm a Ethan!" And we went around a few times, I'm a Mommy, I'm a Daddy, I'm a Ethan to test him, and I had some of his stuffed animals ask him his name and he said it! First time he's been able to answer the question "what is your name?".

I was flabbergasted, lots of hugs and high-fives for that. We got a very rare chance to see a movie today (Moonrise Kingdom) and my Mom watched him for us, I find it hard to believe but she told us he said "Mommy, Daddy come back, I want to go home" after we left (he had a good time anyway). I guess he's going through a developmental spurt! He has a lot of oppositional behaviors that are driving me crazy though, one his newest things which is kind of cute is that he always wants to have on either his Batman or Super Mario Bros. pajamas. We actually went out with him in his pajamas today because we didn't have the time to struggle with him over clothes.

I wonder if I can get him to finally say his name? Recently he's been asking me "Are you a star?" all the time so I just say, "No, I'm Daddy. Who are you?" Hope it works.
