Pianos are expensive, but electronic keyboards are cheap. Buy the boy a lower-end keyboard and have him start experimenting. You can always upgrade to a more expensive keyboard as the years progress.

I agree with the idea of exposing your son to all types of music. I would recommend Mozart since his music is highly mathematical. Give him some good exposure to classical music, just so he understands how the modern styles developed.
