I don't think it is a good idea to label the doctor as bad if he disagrees with a parent. He does have more experience on the variety of possible disorders than most parents do, so even if a parent see ASD, they might not notice that many of the symptoms actually fit with another disorder or more. There must be a reason they did not agree with the ASD label. Did they specifically tell you why they couldn't give you the label? If their reasoning is true, then perhaps they are right. Perhaps, also, they are wrong. I live in Canada too, and I found it easy to get in for an assessment when NOT going through my family doctor. Lots of private clinics can get you in and will get you in quick. You can go get a second opinion, although chances are they will want to know the previous diagnoses and read the reports (I had a similar situation, though not identical, but still, they wanted to see the notes.) Also, if you get a private diagnosis, and you get the diagnosis (you would probably have to get a different diagnosis than one you already have though in order to qualify) then the government will pay back around 75% of the costs up to 1200$ or so. So, that could be an option. It is something you would have to look into though--I know it is real, but I don't know how to do it--I am getting help with that. I am in NS by the way.

I would get a private assessment if you can afford it. Also, if you can swing it (ie afford it), I would find an ABA therapist and work with your child sooner rather than later. I also have a 4 yr old son who was diagnosed abroad by a private psychologist (we live in France). We are moving back to Canada for school and the school has accepted the private assessment. Best, Natasha

IMO, as a general rule - if this isn't part of the diagnostic process, you need to find another clinician.

That is a great point!
