older son entering military

here in Israel, males serve for a mandatory 3 years, females for 2. My oldest daughter had the option of two years of community service, and is an assistant in a special-ed program.

There are so many different jobs in the military, all of which I would assume are pretty well defined. I would also assume they are used to assessing strengths and weaknesses through the basic training, and do their best to place their conscripts in positions that are more or less appropriate. So ... yes, I'd be freaked out, too, but also hopeful. You may be surprised.

my son is probably being placed in a combat unit. Just like many aspies have trouble driving because they have trouble predicting what other drivers will do on the road, I would think that this would become problematic for a soldier as well. I'm praying that if and any possible issues come up, they will come up (safely) in basic training. We've had our share of basic training accidents as well. Tiny country.
Ironically, they offer all new recruits the option of becoming drivers. Not sure if that made me feel any better. We don't own a car, so he has never tried to drive, but loves playing "driver's coach" when I've rented. His driving judgement makes me nervous, but not sure how much to attribute to probable AS or to being a teenage male

I did not pass the physical to the military (mariens - underweight). However at the time I was hell bent on going into something paramilitary. I am a small woman. I am an aspie. I was a mercenary for several years and I was able to go overseas and help bring back children kidnapped by non custodial parents. I do not consider that travel. With a good tan, I could fit in. I'm quite anyway if need be, I'm also very motherly. I had no problems going into places that men couldn't and getting the children, after learning a few phrases. I've been shot at. I'e shot AT people (as far as I know I never hit anyone) and I've laid down cover fire for others.

Yes, aspies can be very good at things like that. Even covert ops. I was extremely focused on the objective at the time. I'm the same way to this day with what I do. I mop a floor, its clean! I bake break, it's good! But I could certainly still board a plane and go get a kidnapped baby, in fact it would be easier, I look grandmotherly now.
